Mama in her kerchief....

What a tranquil evening! It is just a bit chilly outside, so we have a fire going and are both sitting here in front of the fire killing time until Noah gets home. This morning it was just a tad foggy out. A perfect fall day in LA.

Today we went to Nordine Merkley's memorial service. She died in Beaver last week and was buried up there. Mom played hookey from school (for you Utah folks that means "sluff"--or is it "slough"?). She felt a cold coming on last night and since she had already gotten a sub lined up in case she had jury duty again today, well...let's just say it is a good thing she is tenured and that Arnold's Prop. Whatever about being able to fire teachers just for the heck of it is not being voted on 'til tomorrow. She wasn't really coughing yet, y'know? But I will vouch for the fact that she stayed in bed a little longer this morning, and has pretty much recuperated completely from the sore thoat.

Well, about time to go out and get another log for the fire. I think maybe a spot of hot chocolate, don't you think?

haha....oh, DAD.

Matt and I were watching the news the other night and one of the newscasters actually said the word "sluff" (or slough) (as in--"police found two high school girls smoking marijuana while sluffing school"). I can deal with the Utah-speak (although I'm firm in my use of the word "ditch"), but not on the news! People...people. This is why out-of-staters think we're hicks. That and the newscaster's hideous ringletted hairdo. And...lots of things, I suppose!

P.S. May I recommend Swiss Miss Chocolate Sensation, if you're going for instant. I just tried it for the first time last night, and wow is it chocolatey. Yum! I'd even call it tastier than Stephens Gourmet! I'm a little obsessed with hot chocolate lately--it's the time change, I think. When it's darker it seems colder.

If you're not going for instant...well then I guess a little semisweet cocoa, sugar, and milk does the trick too. (But it's so complicated!)

Yeah... it's still dark outside. It's 9:22 am.

And no fireplace for us in the old Squire Condos.

And I still think that the word sluff/slough is super-weird.

Have you tried Caramel Apple Cider?
I am going to give it a try at book group. If it goes well, it may be a fixture at this year's Thanksgiving festivities.
Just trying to lure more people here!

Speaking of Thanksgiving treats, I have obtained the most dee-licious Southern cornbread recipe. It's dee-licious mainly because of the butter and sour cream and whole corn kernels involved--nothing like your fats and starches to make something super-tasty.

I love cider, all kinds. Caramel Apple kind sounds good.

In addition to Eliza's comment, let me just say that I generally despise local news stations—even in major markets they are usually pretty bad. They always just remind me of the movie Anchorman. And for the record, that news station was the local Utah Fox News which in my opinion is just a step above my high school news program “BengalVision.”

I confess I thought there was another non sequitur running amok - until I reread the first comment!

ok - as far as instant cocoa goes - ghiradellis - hands down. although, as grandma mary says, it's really not that hard to make anything from scratch. that goes for hot cocoa especially. and chocolate chip cookies.

as far as staying home - well, annika and i are both battling runny noses, sore throats, etc. i guess when i'm 60 i'll be able to take the day off.

Since backpacking this summer I have been trying hot chocolate with a peppermint tea bag thrown in. Really kind of tasty.

As for local news stations, right on!, M.Keith. The hilarious ones are the foreign language numbers. Supercilious me!
