We joined up with Bonny and her girls for an afternoon of beach fun - followed by dinner and great conversation at Chez Bolander.  It's always a treat!

Rhoda could be a California Girl!!

4th of July fun in the wading pool.

Good times with Ellen and Sarah - and a 4th of July BBQ with Grandma Mary, Grandma Helen, Donna, Mary, and the Kansas Cousins!!

It's heating up outside - but that won't deter us from our adventure seeking!!

4th of July Fun

We had a pretty uneventful - but imminently satisfying - day today.  And it started with sleeping in - for both of us!!  I'm a regular slug-a-bed in the summer, but Harry's had a job that's kept him hopping and up very early - so he was glad for the rest!  He even felt energized enough to go for a run!!

I went for a walk.  And then another walk - with my new wire grocery cart - my resolve this year is walk and shop!!  I've been twice now - and I have to say I love my cart.  In spite of the jokes that Noah and Dad like to make about it.

It was Dad's idea to try out the No Power Cooker idea we'd touted on our Emergency Preparedness newsletter - so we did.  It's a paint can filled with a roll of toilet paper that's been doused in denatured alcohol.  Then you use a 12 oz. chunk chicken can with holes and vents you've put around the sides.  It fits on top.  You light it and voila - you have a heat source.  It very efficiently cooked a pot of rice.

Unfortunately, I thought it would take a long time to cook - so I was on the lawn swing and sort of dozed off - so the bottom of the rice got burned.  Important lesson when you are without power - you still need to pay attention!!

Fortunately the rest of our menu was a Dutch oven dinner that was just fine without the rice - I added bread instead.  And we enjoyed having Noah join us to partake of this excellent repast.

Now I guess it's back to the grind - sleeping in alone - it's a tough job, someone's gotta do it!

A Glorious 4th!!

We enjoyed our 4th of July holiday today - starting with church - and the flowers I took for the chapel. Too bad we can't take them to Virginia with us!

Dinner was at our house - and Hunter and Lisa Anderson joined us. We've been trying to find a date to have them over, and the stars and planets finally lined up just right!

We enjoyed getting to know them. Turns out that Lisa grew up in the ward with Anne and Wayne!! The church continues to be a "small world" indeed! They will be heading to DC in August, where Hunter will matriculate at GWU!!

We had a delicious repast - with more food than we needed: steak, chicken, roasted potatoes, fresh green beans wrapped in bacon, green salad with home-grown tomatoes, artisan bread, cantaloupe, mango, watermelon, strawberries, and sliced oranges. And of course Dawn had a wonderful dessert: Red, white, and blue mini-cheesecakes - and red tarts!! Mary and Donna brought chocolate chip cookies and 4th of July frosted sugar cookies - Mary was thinking of you Robbie!! Not sure how to clean out my fridge - since we leave Tuesday a.m.!!

We were happy to have Grandma Terrill with us.

Greg manned the bar-b-que - in fine style too!

Miss Isla preferred rice cereal and her sippy cup!

Porter and Harry turned Connect 4 into some other game - one they seemed to enjoy!

I did remember to have someone take my picture - so you would know I was there!

Dawn has found a new recipe blog - and was happy to share her treasures with us. The bacon wrapped green beans were a BIG hit!

Harry had to work - and we missed him. Noah had a "gig" - and we missed him too.

Hope yours was a happy 4th too!

Fireworks on the Fourth!!

I always remember the first time Dad kissed me - because it happened on the 4th of July.

We'd been at his folks for most of the day - and on the way taking me back to the Valley, we detoured over to the LA Colosseum to watch the end of the fireworks there.

After getting together all the pics for my mom's b-day party, I'm impressed by all the photos of them together before they got married; the one below is just one of many.

Harry and I have this one

and this one.

You'd think we didn't spend much time together. The truth is, neither one of us had much of a camera. And we just weren't the picture taking type, I guess.

I didn't have an engagement ring either, and my brother used to say we weren't really engaged.

Guess rings and photos aren't requirements for a wonderful romance - that seems to have stood the test of time!!

Happy 43rd Anniversary of the First Kiss!!
