"When the family gets together . . ."

After Charlie and Jeanette's visit, Richard and Julie came for a visit too - so it was great to see them.

Phoebe and David came on Saturday night - and after church on Sunday, the grandkids visited baby Jonah's grave and put flowers on it.

On Sunday afternoon, Chad and his wife and sons were visiting at our ward, and stopped by later for a great visit.  The toughest part about having your own kids leave home is that you usually don't get to see their friends anymore!

Sunday night was the Annual Terrill Holiday Party - ended up with 71 guests - this event grows every year - what would happen if everyone we invited showed up??

Catching up with Aunt Donna.

And Cousin Scott!

Grandma Helen had another chapter of family history for her grandchildren - if you weren't there, you will be getting yours soon!

Always the pinata - this time it was so heavy the metal hanger broke - they shored it up with bungee cords - which of course made it harder to break open!  But more fun too!

The Terrill version of the Kerksiek "Candy Game" was a hit once again - but some of the little kids just don't quite grasp the concept at times - so there were some tears!

Early Monday a.m. Matt and Eliza arrived with their family in tow - more adventures in the next installment!

St. Patty meets Julius Caesar!!

Once again the Ides went off without too many hitches. It did rain, so I was unable to try my plan to have it on our faux stage in front of the garage. After the family talent show at Christmas, I was eager to do the Ides "on stage" but I guess it will wait for another year.

Some old-timers didn't make it, some "new timers" joined us, and the rest of us just had a fine time, like we usually do.

It was especially fun to have Jinny there with us!!

I didn't get a photo of Dad and Steve Plewe - his first time with us - and the first time we've seen him in several years - that was a treat too!

Until 2013!!

"When the family gets together . . " at Christmas time!

We broke with tradition and had the Terrill Family Party on Thursday the 29th. (It has usually been on the first Sunday after Christmas, and it includes Claytons and Terrills!!) It was well attended - over 60 people were there - we loved seeing the Doug Terrill family, represented by Janae and Telare, the Kreitleins, the Dunns, Mom, Mary, and Donna, Scott and Farah, Frances and Dee, the Cieslas, Greg Smith and his family, all the Harry Terrills, Grandma Terrill, and we were glad to be joined by Marjorie and Hal, Blanche and David Card. It featured carols - led by Eliza, piano courtesy of Hannah - with page turning services by Noah! We enjoyed The Candy Game - thanks to the Kerksieks - and a very competitive pinata bashing session! Thanks to Harry Francis and Phoebe for some great soups. Thanks to all who brought appetizers and candy for the pinata. Thanks to Bonny for tons of hot, fresh bread! And we ended the evening with hot fudge sundaes - it was such a fun evening, I took no pictures, except the one below!

Bonny's familyspent the night - since we were heading for Clocker's Corner the next morning. Phoebe and David have been staying at Harry and Dawn's.

Everyone agrees that the the "new look" at Chez Terrill is great.

  • The crowd was bigger than usual at the racetrack - it was a long haul to wait for breakfast - good thing it was warm and beautiful. And we had good company - and fast horses!
Later, when we went to the cemetery to visit Jonah's grave, Eve was at gymnastics and Sully was in the car sleeping, so I've made it a point to include them in other photos on this post.

Theo remembered the racetrack from last year!!

Here we are at Jonah's gravesite. With all the grandkids except Eve and Sully. I commented that I wanted a shot of all the grandkids at his grave - and someone commented that maybe we would note that often there is someone missing from a photo op - but never missing from our hearts!

Every shot had Annika's face blocked by the star!!

So here's her lovely curly-hair, missing teeth photo!!

We did pull off a family photo of Mom, Dad and kids - all with our matching sunglasses look! Dad and I could not ask for greater children!! We love being with all of them together - and with their spouses and children too - we truly have a "quiver full!"

Jonah's headstone was just installed this week - they did a lovely job. It is sweet to remember this little boy who means so much to our family.

Christmas Day Night - and the night after that!!

This post is dedicated to the Terrill Family Party - but these Terrills had a fun Christmas night, and I wanted to share it!! Hannah and Henry did a little number on the ivories, and that got everyone into the musical Christmas mode - we ended up spending the evening singing every carol in the Hallmark Christmas Carols book - even the ones we didn't know!! It was fun, to say the least. Fortunately, the houses on either side of us are vacant, so we didn't bother anyone!!

and now -

Terrill Family Christmas Party - Photo recap for your viewing pleasure!!

We were trying to remember and figured that this was the 4th Annual New Edition of the Terrill Family Party. That would be the one that's on the first Sunday after Christmas.

You will note that there were some special first time guests to the new edition. Karen flew down from Idaho, and Phil, Amy, and family were in town, so they were able to come.

Harry F. showed us some fine culinary efforts with a pot of great homestyle chicken noodle and vegetable soup. Salad, rolls, fruit, left-over potato soup from Christmas Eve, and a dizzying array of yummy dessert treats rounded out the menu.

Scott and family came.

The kids enjoyed playing the dreidl game.

A somewhat casual version of the Nativity - but sweet and moving just the same.

The Siblings - together at last!!

Some of another group of siblings - certain Claytons are now part of the Terrill Family Party!

Harry F., Dawn, and family - even if Harry W. wasn't interested in posing!!

Bill and Marjorie are Honorary Terrills it seems!! We love having them each year!

Doug and family - always ready for some fun!!

I realized I didn't take a photo of Dad and me!! So here's one of Dad, so you'll know he was there - clean-up monitor extraordinaire I might add!

Greg - another honorary Terrill!

It was really great to have Amy, Phil, kids joining us. Not sure what the white spot is on Connor's face - my photography skills produce some odd effects some times!

And by taking only one shot, I got Steve with his eyes shut!! But they were open the whole night!!

Some Cousin Cuties - yes??

Hannah and Robbie - always ready for fun!

Bonny, Bruce and their bevy of beauties - always a great addition to the party.

Grandma said she got a nap this afternoon - so she was up for all the festivities.

Phoebe, David, and family - we were happy they were here this year.

For many years, the Terrill Family Christmas Party was a pivotal event in our lives. It seemed like once we had the party, the Christmas season could truly begin. (It was held on the last Saturday before Christmas.) As a growing family spread over many states and even countries - the party had a smaller and smaller "original core" in attendance. Also, it became a bigger job than Grandma Terrill could handle on her own. There was talk that maybe it would be ending. Grandma had done a wonderful job for so many years. It seemed like it would not be possible to replicate what it had become for our family.

One year it was Dad's 60th birthday, and we did a party for him in place of the family party. It seemed that maybe the Christmas party would truly not happen again. But the next year, Dad suggested that we do one at the church - and just invite everyone and see who came. We included more than Terrills too. And it was pretty simple - we did pizza from Costco in fact, with potluck for the rest. We didn't have Santa come, and we didn't have a talent show. We didn't exchange gifts either.

We did keep up the nativity - even though we'd decided on the first Sunday night after Christmas, the nativity still seemed essential to the event.

Everyone is not there. We miss those who are not. And we miss those who are no longer with us. But we love being with those who are there. And we love it when someone who hasn't been able to come in the past is able to come - like Amy and Karen this time.

Sometimes it's good to keep up traditions - even if you have to do a makeover on them. It's worth the effort. Tonight certainly was!
