A fine Saturday!!

After last week's havoc, it was nice to have a quiet week that ended with a temple outing with Greg and Miella.  They will be getting married on June 29th - and that will be another fine Saturday, that's for sure!

Many other ward members came, but this was all we could round up outside for a photo shoot.  It was a beautiful day - inside and out!

March 20, 1982

I know I post this each year, but with the passing years, the day, the event, the occasion grows in significance as we contemplate how much has changed since that memorable time - now 28 years ago.

The suits on Dad and Uncle Jim are certainly "dated," - interestingly the female wardrobe items seem a little more "timeless." (That may just be my viewpoint. But Frances and Grandma have always had pretty much "timeless" hairdos.)

Most importantly, however, is the fact that the event itself has made our family timeless - and for all eternity too!

42 years of wedded bliss - and all it entails!

Isn't life full of ironies?? Harry has not been that busy all year - so today, our 42nd anniversary - he's sitting at the job site waiting for some guy to show up!! And my car is in the shop. But our tree is up!

We have never been able to go to the temple on our anniversary - because in the past, the temple has been closed for a Christmas break. This year it is not closed - so we figured we'd head out, do a session, have lunch at Santa Monica Pier (in honor of the lunch we had there 42 years ago!!), and then hit the Getty - which we've never visited!!

We have spent past anniversaries taking "get aways" to places like Pasadena and Santa Barbara (don't laugh until you've tried it!!) Did our Christmas shopping, went to movies, visited places we'd always thought we wanted to visit.

So, the Getty may wait until another day. But we will undoubtedly make it to the temple in time. And in the time honored tradition of those who get married before Christmas, we will be doing some Christmas shopping too.

But hanging out with Harry is the best way to spend time - any day of the year. When he was on his mission, I waited anxiously each week for the mail to come. Over the years, I have waited anxiously/impatiently/even patiently for him to get home. Today will be no exception.

It's good to have things - and people - in life you can depend on!

Los Angeles Temple Jubilee Celebration

Today was our stake's Jubilee Celebration at the Los Angeles Temple. This is a 50 year anniversary celebration of the dedication of the temple in March, 1956. (It has taken over a year to give all the stakes a day - a Saturday - to commemorate the occasion.)

We were able to work at the two sessions that our stake had today. In between these two sessions, a special meeting was held in the Assembly Room. President Andrus asked how many in the audience had been at the actual dedication - Dad and I raised our hands along with about a dozen others. He had some great stories to share - and maybe it's because they were so real to me - because "I was there!" I remember fundraising for the temple. I remember attending the open house and the dedication - and having the opportunity to shake hands with President McKay.

I may not have a photograph of the event, but I can tell you what I was wearing - a brown velvet dress with a lace collar - that I would probably think was lovely now - but didn't then! (Maybe because it was a somewhat large hand-me-down from Joan that I didn't want to wear!)

The Los Angeles Temple has played a big role in my life. I was reflecting on this after Dad commented, while we riding down in the elevator to leave, that for the last 30 hours, we'd spent 20 of them either driving to and from or working at the temple!

Here's a shot from '97 or '98 of Young Women Temple baptisms. Can you tell who's who? (Hannah is a bit hidden!) I remember doing temple baptisms as a young girl - they used to have you do them as soon as you were baptized. I remember all the times my parents went to the temple - I would watch my mom get ready.

And in 1996, I took the Achievement Day girls for a visit to the Visitor's Center and the temple grounds. Sister Andrus quoted from the dedicatory prayer - I don't remember the exact words - but President McKay prayed that all who saw it would be touched and impressed and drawn to the truth of the gospel. She told a story of a young woman who had had just that experience - driving up and down Santa Monica Blvd. and seeing the temple had prompted her to ask questions about the church whenever she met a Mormon - and she eventually joined and was married there.

And of course, it all started here at the Los Angeles Temple - on December 22, 1967!

I love the temple - I love seeing it, being in it, serving in it, love seeing friends and family there, love running into people I can make a connection with somehow, love the weddings we've had there, love all the reasons there are to go to the temple.

And in the LA Temple, I love the baked custard they have in the cafeteria - it hasn't changed since I started enjoying it there 28 years ago - my mom says they had it earlier than that too! It's as good as my mom's and Joy's (my college roommate who made baked custard for dessert whenever it was her week to cook!)

I forgot my camera today - was going to take a shot of Dad and me on the grounds - hope I've drawn you a "word picture" that will have to suffice.
