Young Women Camp - 2015

I was pretty surprised - I would in fact say very surprised - when I was asked to serve as Stake Young Women Camp Director!  I spent a lot of the spring and summer grousing about being an old lady and channeling Idonna Richins - but no one seemed to listen to me!  And lots happened to complicate my life and I was hither and yon and wondering how it would all come together - especially when I got diagnosed with a kidney stone and ended up needing surgery to blast it out!

But we kept having meetings 2 or 3 times a month to get the YCLs trained and organized.  And I met often with Trista O - our Stake Young Women President - who was convinced I would do just fine and was the perfect person for the job!

When my granddaughters were here in the summer, they set to work making "pillow treats" for me to distribute daily, Polly was born in a timely manner and I was able to spend some good time with Eliza and family, the kidney stone got blasted out with a minimum of fuss and bother, we got up to Phoebe's for Agnes' baptism, and Frances was able to come and stay with Grandma so that Harry could come to camp with me.

I told Harry he's in for the long haul now!!  If I go to camp, he goes to camp!!  (And he told Trista it was the best week he'd had all summer!)

Eve went to camp with Bonny's girls, since their family was going to be on a cross-country road trip, and was feeling sad about not having a grandchild at camp with me.  But Ella and Esme opted to come along, and that was really fun!

There were 58 girls at camp - 8 from the El Monte Spanish Ward - which is in another stake - and I was at first concerned that this might be a problem.  But the girls all reached out to one another in an exemplary manner - fellowshipping at its finest!

Skit night was lots of fun - always is!

I worked with some great leaders too - here we are doing our skit - we had been assigned the Young Women Value of Virtue.

Jane Colton took all these photos - and it made me wish I had a treasure trove of photos from the 15 years I went to camp so many years ago!!  I have few photos from camp - I think I too busy to think about taking photos - and maybe didn't even have a good camera, now that I think about it.

Sister Ogilvie kept telling me these were the best girls and I'd love being with them - and she was absolutely correct!  I love everyone of them!  Even the ones whose names I kept mixing up!

Mike and Shauna Miller and Chris Reid brought up canoes and we went to Silverwood Lake - what a fun day!!

Members of the priesthood came up daily - we were well-looked after - and the culminating testimony meeting was a perfect end to perfect week.

We had some great activities, crafts, we introduced "The Uchtdorf Hour" - ask me about that sometime - it was a hit! The food was good, ask me about "Singing Rocks" too - what a great tradition - we did away with Read Alouds and just had mail instead - and it was a hit too!

Those Young Women know how to have a great time!!

So glad no one listened seriously to my grumbling!

Hannah turns 30 today - and she's off with Robbie and Rhoda on a wonderful European jaunt!!  I can't think of a better way to spend your 30th birthday!  (Can't even remember how I spent mine - I just know it wasn't a European jaunt!!)

It was a happy day when Hannah joined us! She came 2 days early - a real treat for a woman who'd had kids 11 and 13 days late!  And she was a sweet, easy-going little girl.  Although she was my first climber!!

She was independent and hard-working.  Rather than wait for me to take her to Michaels for her Science Fair Project supplies, she said, "Can I use anything I can find in the garage?"  She continues to be a can-do kind of gal and impresses me continually with her ability to tackle projects, take on new skills, and make it all look pretty easy!

Hannah is a wonderful wife and mother.  She's a great student - always learning and growing. She is kind and thoughtful to others.  She is a wonderful member of our family - and I am happy remembering the day of her birth and the joy she has brought into our lives!

Happy day to my brothers - oldest and youngest!

  My oldest brother -

 and my youngest brother -

were born on the same day, 19 years apart!!

Lyn famously quipped - "now you have a birthday to celebrate on this day, you don't need me around!"

Happy day to both of you!

Happy anniversary!!

This is the only wedding photo of Helen - there are none of the two of them!  And this was actually taken after the wedding, at a studio.

But even without a collection of photos to document the event, the event happened, and they had a rich, full life together.

Happy 76th wedding anniversary!!
