Sunday Night after Sunday Dinner

Miss Isla sporting a "Mohawk Do!!"

Which is reminiscent of Bonny as a baby.

And actually looks a little like me as a baby.

With a holiday tomorrow, we were all a bit relaxed - ended up watching Princess Bride. Why is that always a treat??

Enjoy your holiday!!

Totally Random

Here is Harry F.'s old bike - as in the bike from his teen years. Dad's thinking of "tuning it up."

And here is the bike I got for $10 at a yard sale - actually, the mother of one of my students was unloading it out of her car last night as Dad and I walked by on our way home from the street fair. And I said, "I'm looking for a bike." So she called her sister to see what she wanted for it!! And we walked it home! I should have done a before and after shot - this is how it looks now - after Bicycle Sam did his magic. Bike Path - here I come!! (Bruce had told us to check out yard sales - we hadn't really - but we got lucky!)

When Porter was here last week, he chose the door-hanger tablet from the Grandma's Treasure Box - and dictated the following! Then he hung it on our door!! I love his logic!! And there have been no bad guys, that's for sure!!

And let's see who can guess where this is - and guess what used to be here!! It always amazes me how fast they can demolish things that have been around for years!! A hint: Think Dad having late night dinners with Rusty Z.

Dad's busy watching the Suns creep up on the Lakers. I need to get to work on my talk for tomorrow.

I am loving the holiday weekend!!

So what's new with you??

Dad and I took the plunge and bought a new mattress!! (Our "old" mattress was at least 50 years old - we'd gotten it from Grandma and Grandpa Terrill about 25 years or so ago!!)

We'll let you know how well we sleep tonight!! But it's considerably taller - if there's an earthquake - as there was in '94 - that "tosses" me out of bed - I have a lot farther to fall, that's for sure!!

In other late-breaking news, we tended the Terrill kidlets last night so H and D could celebrate their 10th anniversary in style. Miss Isla was fine - even slept a bit - but wouldn't take the bottle they left. Being held was sufficient to keep her happy however.

And she is pretty cute and huggable. Holding her is not a chore. (Dad was having a meeting in the living room.)

But it pretty much meant that the other kids sat and watched T.V. while I held Isla. However, not much complaining came from them either.

And H and D enjoyed their meal out!!

More birthday fun!!

Well, the fun never stops around here!! When I got to school on Monday, Marcie said, "I was going to bring you a cake, but I had a migraine. So I will bring one tomorrow." I told her she really didn't have to, but she was determined.

Here I am with Anna May, one of the Girls of '45.

Marcie had decorated it with fondant - to look like a stack of books.

It was pretty great - almost too pretty to cut!! (But we ate it anyway!!)

Sue Graham brought over roses in a lovely little red pitcher.

And Arlene brought chocolate and yellow balloons!! Lots of birthday cards too!!

Maybe I should call it the Merry Month of Maybar!!

A decade down!!

In the scope of eternity, a decade is a drop in the bucket. But the decade that has passed since Harry and Dawn got married has certainly brought many changes.

Mostly good ones, I might add.

Congrats to both of you on your day - hope you get to enjoy it!!

Happy Birthday Henry!!

This continues to be my fave photo of Henry!!

Henry was the first Terrill grandson - and he still has a way with the ladies!!

We always have fun at the Fillmores - last April was no exception - and we're looking forward to more visits this summer.

We were pretty excited to get Henry here safe and sound.

If you don't know Henry, be sure to ask us to introduce you - you'll be a fan!!

Have a great day Henry - we love you!!

Birthday Memories!!

As usual I had a lovely birthday - I usually do - and that's because I have lovely friends and family members who make sure I do!!

Even with Harry working all weekend, Dawn did the dinner and cake honors for me. She's a wonder that girl is! Thanks Dawn!!

Porter made me some lovely wrapping paper. And I got a load of lovely gifts.

The men at the party!!

Grandma Helen came - I thought Dad got a lovely shot of her here.

The Marys were there too.

I had a crew of candle-blowing helpers!!

Sib love!!

Hmm - I don't feel old!! Hopefully I don't look too old. When they sang to me in R.S., someone asked which birthday it was, so I said 65. Afterward a friend said, "I didn't know you were that old." (I'm sure she didn't mean it the way it sounds here in print - but it does give one pause, doesn't it??)

And we can always put it in perspective when we see the likes of the ever-charming Miss Isla.

And for your viewing pleasure, Dad did a little mini-video of the occasion. If you contributed in any way to my happy day, I give you my thanks - that includes the many Facebook greetings, ecards, snail mail cards, and "Happy Birthdays" I received.

Happy birthday again

Couldn't resist adding this one too.

Happy birthday to YOU!

We LOVE our grandma! (and mom. and mother-in-law.) Especially on her birthday. Since we won't be there to help you blow out candles today, here's the little party we had for you this morning before church.

(Sometimes when Theo sings "Happy Birthday" he does it with this accent that I can't quite place. I don't know. Well at any rate it's sung with love.)

Happy Birthday Betsy!!

I'm pretty sure I post the same pics every year on her birthday - but then I don't have too many current photos of Betsy - unfortunately we don't get to see her very often.

This is probably 1974 or 5 - at Richard's house. She is shown here with Bonny, Chris, Jennifer, Harry, and Erika. Betsy is front and center.

This was '81 or '82 - at Will Rogers State Beach - with Harry, Bonny, and Phoebe - who is buried in the sand. Would you believe that I still have that blue bedspread - and the towels!!

This was Betsy's first birthday - we have birthdays one day apart - when she was born, I was a little disappointed that she missed my birthday - I thought it would be fun to share a birthday. But it's fun to share a month!!

This is 1973 I think. Or 1974 maybe? We are at Alice's house in Riverton. Don't you love my kids' saddle shoes??

No matter the exact dates - Betsy is a great niece, a great young woman, a great mother, daughter, sister too!!

Have a great year ahead to top it all off!!

Birthday Girls!!

I probably post this photo every year!! But it's because it's so perfect for the occasion - here is a shot with Karen, a fave niece of mine, taken on my birthday several years ago - at Butterfield - a fave Terrill memory. And there's Amy in the corner - with her hair in French braids. It doesn't get much better than that!!

Karen and Scott made me an Aunt!! (A role I love, btw!!) When Karen was born, Harry was on his mission, and he wrote me about it.

"1 Junio, Wed. (1966)

Dear Barb,

Yes, I am alive. Just haven't made it 'til today. . .I'm an Uncle 2nd time. My sis had a baby girl last week. They didn't even say the weight or date, named it Karen. Pretty cool, huh? . . .

Love, Harry"

I love Karen!! She is so warm and real and genuine and fun!! She deserves the best - so that's my wish for her for the year ahead!! (Pretty cool, huh???)

The Party Continues!!

Dad and I drove out to GH to celebrate Mom's big day. Bill and Angela had taken her shopping and out to lunch, so she had a busy day.

I brought dinner and we enjoyed a nice time around the old dining table.

Mary assembled the goodies I brought - I was busy entertaining Mom by showing her all the old photos on my blog. She seemed to enjoy the walk down memory lane - and we had a few laughs too!

She said no cake, so I brought a fruit tart from Pavilions - you really just need something to stick candles in !!

It was great to visit with Angela and Bill. Angela will be heading back to Idaho, where she's finishing up school and getting ready to student teach.

The big party for Mom is on June 12th - so I guess we will just celebrate until then!!

90 years and counting!!

Growing up, this was the photo I always saw displayed at my Grandma Stevens house. I'm not sure how old my mom is here, but I assumed it was her senior picture or something. It's interesting how you "create" your own definitions of things in your parents' lives.

I remember the photo from my grandparents' house in Inglewood and I would imagine my mom growing up in the back bedroom where the picture was displayed. Problem was, my mom didn't grow up in that house - in fact, she never lived in that house!!

The longer my mom lives, and the more we talk, the more accurate the picture of her life becomes for me. Maybe you have to have lived a certain amount of your own life before the details of another person's life can be meaningful.

This is definitely a picture of how I remember my mom when I was growing up. She is here with our neighbor Mrs. Vergine. And my mom spent a lot of years in dresses - all day long!

These are years when I wasn't at home much - but this is how I think of my mom when she came to stay when our first three kids were born. I'm thinking she was younger than I am now too!! (and I don't feel old yet!!)

And this is how she looks right now - and it isn't very old looking is it? Mom indeed carries her years well.

There are lessons to be learned from lives well-lived. I plan to keep learning them from her too!!

Happy 90th Birthday Mom!!

Celebrations of one sort and another - and just some fun too.

Ara came for her birthday weekend - nearly six months later!! And she spent it mostly with me because Dad was working. We had a mighty long to-do list, but she not only helped me get the items done, but she kept track and crossed them off as we did them. We finished up the marketing at Von's and she said, "Well, Grandma, that's the last item on our list. They are all crossed off now!" (She is truly her mother's daughter - Bonny too loved order and organization and the sense of getting it all done!)

Friday night we hit the MHS production of "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," and it was great - but I didn't think to take any pictures - especially when they tell you "No Flash Photography!" And then on Saturday night she went with me to Scott Card's Eagle Court of Honor. We took Molly both nights and saw other friends from the ward - whom Ara knows from her visits here. (A note here: Scott's dad Troy was one of Dad's Scouts when he was the Scoutmaster in the Monrovia Ward back in the day!!)

On Saturday morning, we had breakfast at the Nano Cafe - I'd been wanting to check it out - it's pretty good breakfast food - and pretty good smoothies. Then we hit the stores - I had to get things together for the Young Women Transition to Relief Society, and Ara was a big help. We also shopped for birthday items for Ara - made some fashion finds - perhaps Ara will wear them sometime when I'm sharp enough to take pics of her in them!!

Dad made it home in time to enjoy some "Golf" with Ara and me. We each won one game - then had a final round - which Dad won. Maybe it was "male" luck!!

Once again Ara helped me get ready for the big event - it was on Sunday afternoon. She set up chairs, distributed hymnbooks, carried stuff in, and even did prelude music for us! Nora Graham Koch was our keynote speaker - our theme was "There Are Never Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen."

It's always fun with the Ogilvies!

After we cleaned up from the activity, we headed out to Malibu and enjoyed dinner at Chez Bolander.

Everyone seemed to have zeroed in on their favorite game!!

Soon it was Monday morning - and we know what that's like. Although the students were pretty mellow today - maybe it was the cool, gray, overcast day. I could have this kind of weather all week - just sunshine for the weekends!!

Ara is lots of fun to spend time with - thanks for a great time Ara!!

***************

And here's the "official" birthday celebration shot for Dawn!!

May is really a big birthday month around here!!
