Note:

I'm going to post all the pics I took while we were gone - maybe even a little slideshow - no doubt you are eagerly anticipating more photo journeys from me - but I'm busy unpacking, doing laundry, collecting the mail, listening to the voice mails, and harvesting veggies from our garden!! (Good thing, since there's not much else in the house to eat!! Guess I need to add "go to the store" to my "to do" list!!)

But in the meantime, here's the scoop on the most important part of our journey! Check it out!

Ah, the happy bride and groom!

And the reception - another fun party for one and all - even Theo had a better time than you might guess from the photograph!!

And now Hannah and Robbie are celebrating in Paris, the City of Love - how appropriate!!

Happy Anniversary you two!!

Today is Henry's Baptism

My scanner is not working, so I can't scan a picture from Ara's baptism, but here's a shot of Ella at her baptism.

We are pretty excited that Henry, grandchild number 3, is getting baptized today. We will undoubtedly be posting photos soon!!

Just wanted to let you know we were wishing you were all with us - but we know you are with us in spirit!!

Sad news yesterday

A few of you have asked me about the crash on the red line of the DC metro yesterday (go here for news stories). Matt wasn't involved...if that's not obvious by now...and I'm very grateful. In fact his train wasn't even very delayed by it, though most were. As far as I know, none of our friends were involved either.

Just FYI.

It probably felt weird for him to get on it again this morning though. Funny how we take our safety for granted. Probably because the metro is pretty safe almost all the time. Certainly safer than the freeway, especially at rush hour.

We love Matt and are always grateful and happy to see him walk in the door after his long commute each night.

Father's Day Festivities and Other Weekend Events

A fun weekend wraps up - I promise not to turn everything into a slideshow, but this seemed easier than making a comment under each photo!! Besides, I wanted to be sure I remembered how to do it!!

Friday night was a lovely shower for J.J.'s bride-to-be - I did the flowers and the games - thanks Dawn for the flowers from your yard - and two of your pitchers!! Don't you love the quilt Margaret made??

Sunday at church we got a new 2nd counselor - Ed Smith, replacing Bjorn Dodd, who's busy being the dad of 3 under 2! Mom needed him at home more!! Sorry, no photos of that event.

Sunday evening found the local Terrills and Bolanders enjoying fun, food and company - Dad found his gift after a little scavenger hunt - and then Harry F. took everyone on a GPS Cache Search - probably everyone but me knew what they were!! Porter gave Grandpa a snake he had made at school - out of clay. And then we had the "Profile Wars" - Bruce commented that he thought he could hold his own with the Terrills!

I taught Ara and Ella Phase 10 with dice, Harry W. discovered my poker chip collection, we ended the evening with some decadent brownies, and once again I marveled at how smart I was to come up with the Grandma's Treasure Box!!

Thanks to Ella for location shots on the GPS Cache Search!!

The Father's Day Month Finale!!

This was supposed to be a surprise for Dad - but it was too late to get more techno support from Eliza - who walked me through the process Saturday a.m. - she is a great teacher btw!! - so I enlisted his assistance - kind of like buying your own present or something!!

I couldn't figure out how to get the photos in the order I wanted them - so use your imagination!! Think in terms of when children in the family were born - I tried to put the wedding pic first - but it wouldn't go there!! (I will ask Eliza how - and maybe even do it if it's not too complicated, but it's getting past my bedtime!!)

Dad chose the music - and we thought it fit very nicely - and had fun snapping our fingers - hope you do too! (Although he said things like, "Haven't these pictures been posted on the blog already?)

(I realize that just about everyone except me makes slideshows all the time - but those who know my technological limitations ought to be impressed!!)

Happy Father's Day to Dad, Bruce, Harry, David and Matt!!

MIss Ella - dancer, leader and good citizen

Saturday we (we would be Donna and I) went to Ella's dance recital - but she was out of costume before I could take a picture - so you will just have to believe me that she looked lovely. (Unless Bonny posts a pic.)

We did get one of Annika's little friends in her costume - they were "The Dancing Dolls" and were indeed very cute to watch.

A group shot of the fans after the show.

Annika entertained herself combing Donna's hair.

Bonny and Ara were there to cheer. (Annika turned around and said to Bonny, "Can I have your scarf?" "No" "Your jacket?" "No" "Your camera?" "No" - guess that's why she opted for Donna's comb!!)

Ella promoted on Thursday to middle school. Bonny informs me that she got the Citizenship/Leadership Award for her class. Way to go Ella!!

Happy Birthday Grandpa Clayton

In this case, it's Happy Day to my Grandpa C - would be your Great Grandpa!

There are lots of old photos of him but not many contemporary ones. That's why this one is a fave. It's taken in December of 1970 - he's holding Bonny. I'm not sure why I didn't have my dad get in the picture!

He was a wonderful grandpa - in later years, I heard stories about him that were not so flattering, but I choose to remember how I felt around him - he obviously loved us and was happy to see us - and he came around often. Lots of other relatives thought we lived too far out in the sticks as they said, and so we didn't see them often.

And he could always be counted on to sing to us in Dutch (he served a mission in Holland,) pull quarters and even silver dollars out of his ear (he was a magician,) and give us gifts of watches and jewelry (he was a jeweler and watchmaker - when stuff got left in his shop for over 30 days, we could count on getting it for Christmas!!)

During the Father's Day month, let's hear it for great Grandpas (and Great-Grandpas too!)

Middle School Memories

Each year for the last 13 years, I have been required to work at Clifton Promotion ceremonies. There is a continuing debate about the validity of middle school or junior high "graduation" ceremonies - which is why they are called "promotion" ceremonies. The research shows that schools that do away with grade school and middle school ceremonies to mark the rite of passage have lower drop out rates in high school. The reasoning seems to be that for some sub-cultures in the United States, one graduation ceremony is as good as another. If you've had one after 8th or 9th grade, why stick around for another one? Hence, not getting one after 8th or 9th, inspires you to stick around for the one in 12th grade.
Because I was thinking about all this, I went hunting for middle school promotion shots of each of our kids - starting with the youngest. Fortunately having a middle school promotion didn't deter them from further commencement adventures!

This would be Noah in 2000 something - I am so bad with dates. The event of note was that Noah rumpled Mr. Pagano's hair as he strode across the stage - maybe because Mr. Pagano had been rumpling Noah's hair for 3 years at Clifton!!

And here is Hannah - and the note here is that these really are not her best friends or anything, but it did seem to capture the wonderful diversity that is Monrovia. And it's a good shot of Hannah's elaborate 'do - she really does have a great head of hair!! (Elaborate by Terrill standards I should say!)

Eliza in 1996 - I know because it's written on the back of the photo - I like the way this captures the way she strides - I can just "see" her when I look at this shot. We shopped forever - and then went back and bought the first dress she saw - and liked. She said, "But maybe there is one out there that I like better - I won't know if I don't look. And if I don't look, it will bother me!" So we looked -for a very long time too! But she does look lovely, and she was happy - and that is what is important. And the young lady in front of her is Alex, who is still her good friend.

Phoebe at the lectern in the auditorium - this was a year of tumultuous events - Grandpa T. had just died, I was in charge of the 8th grade dance, and the funeral was the day before. Sharilin Miller volunteered to help out and took Phoebe shopping for shoes! This was 1991. Phoebe is still "leading" out - probably always will! (This also appear to be the year of padded shoulders!)

Harry wanted "real" menswear - but they just didn't have it in his size anywhere we shopped - until Toni Monson told me about a store in Alhambra of all places - right by the office too!! And so Harry was decked out in all his finery - and he's still a spiffy dresser. This was 1996. That's part of Phoebe in the corner.

1984 -the year Bonny promoted - found us on Primrose - and Krissy Salazar babysat Eliza while we went. That year, all six valedictorians were girls - and lovely fashionable girls too!! I made Bonny's blouse - the outfit was of her design - and she still has that flair.

So there it is, the walk down Memory Lane. I have a wall of photos in our hall - each child's promotion photo with a high school graduation photo underneath it. I tried photographing said wall, but the result didn't do it justice - so you'll just have to drop by and see for yourself!
