1986 - 21 posts to go!! (Yikes!!)

When I initially started doing these anniversary posts, I really had no idea they would turn into such a production. (Not that they are polished in any way, by production I mean the time and effort they entail.)

For one thing, my photos are in major disarray. So this effort has gotten me going on getting them in some kind of order. On the other hand, rifling through 40 years of photos also means getting some of them more mixed up than they were before! Dawn should have been living here this year - she would get me organized!

But it's truly a labor of love - I love doing it, I love reading the comments, I love feeling like I'm really writing family history! Please feel free to correct any errors you find!!

The back of this photo above says January 1986 - so it seems like a good place to start!

Harry was in a musical at Clifton - something about a boy named Bill. He did a great job. Here he is with Paul Kojogalanian - a good friend. Bonny was in "Annie Get Your Gun" at the high school, but I can't find a single photo. You wouldn't recognize Bonny anyway - she had a black wig, tons of make up - and so did every other Indian on the stage! (and I didn't have a telephoto lens back then either, so they were a lot like the Rose Bowl shots from the Dance Festival!)

A bathtub shot of Hannah and Eliza - I should do a collage of bathtub shots. One thing this posting has done is open up a world of possibilities for "Theme Collages That Would Make Great Gifts."

Hannah had casts on both legs for the first half of 1986. We had to soak them off each week and then go get new ones. She had club feet - but the casts, and later a brace she wore at night - never seemed to slow her down.

Eliza's 3rd birthday - and she's closing her eyes!

A backyard shot with the bouncing horse.

Harry promoted from Clifton Middle School.

St. George fun once more! This was getting habit-forming - a great habit we all loved!

Hannah's first birthday celebration - on August 21st! I was going to Provo for a roomie reunion, so I left everyone in St. George and missed Hannah's actual 1st birthday, which bothered the kids more than me - or Hannah for that matter!

Dad in his Stake Track Meet shirt - he's been on the running scene for a long time!

Eliza making friends at the kiddie pool.

Dad playing Johnny Weismuller I guess!

Grandma took me to see "Nicholas Nickleby" at the Ahmanson - an 8 hour musical - we went on two consecutive Saturdays - it was great - and Harry appropriated my shirt!

At some point that summer, we went farther up the state in Utah - I'm not sure if we did St. George at the same time or not. Here are Lyn and RoseAnn with Kevin, Hannah, Eliza and Hester at Alice and Dales' house in Riverton.

Dad with Harry, Hester and Eliza - still at Alice and Dale's.

Another "Dos Hannahs" shot - blurry but it works! When they were little, they didn't seem to realize they both had the same name - I think they just thought they were being called more often!

We have a lot of "bed"shots too!

Dad and Harry ran a 10K on the 4th of July that year. Like I said, running's not really a new thing.

There are lots of pictures with the little girls in these dresses - I loved them!

Late summer, early fall brought the all too familiar waves of nausea - and I'm not sure why someone always captures me in the throes of it, but this was an "accidental" photo - a water ski shot got superimposed - and the nausea was a lot like sea-sickness! Another baby was on the way - for a couple of people who at one point in their marriage wondered if they'd ever have kids, we seemed to have "figured it out!"

Harry's birthday - which would be his 14th.

The event at Jim and Trudy's was someone's blessing or baptism I'm sure. I included this shot of Hannah in her "orthopedic shoes!"

Like I said before, I'm just always going to include shots of Jim!!

Bonny turned "Sweet 16!!"

It was a Sunday - she tried to persuade the DMV to let her take her driving test on the Friday before instead of the Monday after - but she didn't prevail. But she did pass with flying colors - we had a driver!!

And Bonny had her first date - the Homecoming Dance at Arcadia High with Chad Edginton! I was too sick to take Bonny shopping for a dress, so Dad went - and went - and went! And I thought he paid way too much for the dress, but he said, "Barb, I just wanted to get it done!" Bonny was used to having me make her dresses to her specifications - and it wasn't so easy to find that in a store! But she was lovely - of course, she would be - and was - lovely in old sweats! (Amy (Smith) Gray always says "Bonny came to seminary in these old pink sweats all the time - but she looked great!")

The ward Halloween Party - and Linda Rich as Dolly Parton - the all-time great costume I think!

Phoebe with Ali and Meli.

Hannah and Eliza got in this one.

While combing through photos, I've come across far too many jack o'lantern shots - this is to represent all the pumpkins we've ever carved!

The trampoline at Jim and Trudy's.

The little girls playing.

Harry F. ran cross-country in high school. Both Harry and Noah are good, natural runners - they just don't seem to love it as much as Dad does.

Dad's birthday - and his eyes are closed yet again!

The socks on the new couch we got that year! It was comfy. We had the other one recovered - and it's still here - it's in the sewing room now. This "new" one lasted 5 or 6 years. But we certainly enjoyed it - and the matching chair and ottoman.

This was the Terrill clan in 1986. Already almost out of date - a new baby was due in May. I was an "old" mom - and 3 little kids would prove quite a challenge for me - but somehow we muddled through it all.

Stay tuned!

That Calvin!

Tonight at dinner Calvin said, "Mom, look!"
He then pulled his own finger and made a loud "bum noise" (as Henry dubbed it).
My response, "You wouldn't do that if my father where here."

And in my defense, I never taught him the pull my finger trick.

Karl and Dane come to dine at Chez Primrose!

Karl and Dane both have standing invitations to dine with us on any Sunday. They were coming last Sunday, but the fires got in the way!

So we were happy when they joined us yesterday! Here's a profile shot of Dane, which Hannah seemed to think looked like a profile shot of Dad she'd posted on her blog.

Afterwards we enjoyed a game of Syzygy - Karl will claim victory - but I spotted a spelling error and claimed victory for myself!

1985 - The Year of Hannah!!

I found a school photo of Bernie - and 1985 starts out with a couple of key issues - my being sick and pregnant, and Bernie having lots of behavior issues. So a photo of him here seems like a good place to start. After the Christmas crisis, when I really couldn't function and care for Bernie either, I told the counselor at LDS Social Services that it really wasn't working. We were referred to the NPI at UCLA, and we were able to get Bernie in there. He was there for 3 months - he came home on the weekends and stayed with us - on Fridays, when we went to get him, we had a session with the psychiatrist who was caring for him. We took him back on Sunday nights.

This particular photo really captures the first weeks of 1985 - I did everything from a prone position on the couch! One day I felt so ill, I told Dad, "It can't be normal to feel this bad." So we went to the ER, and I was admitted in a rather dehydrated state. They filled me full of fluids and sent me home a few hours later. After that I slowly got better.

I will say here that with my first 4 pregnancies, I had been prescribed a drug called Bendectin - it didn't really make you feel all that much better, but you wouldn't throw up - which enabled you to at least function at some level. A family filed suit against the makers of the drug - and even though the court found that the birth defects in question were not caused by the drug - but in fact were caused by a birth injury - the drug maker quit making the drug. Millions of women had used it for over 30 years - and like my doctor said, the ensuing dehydration women suffered from throwing up so much caused more harm to the unborn baby than doing nothing!

I will tuck in this photo of Hannah's birth - since it ended up here! But we are still in the early part of the year. (and her birth wasn't until August!)

Just before Easter, the doctors told us that Bernie needed to be in a home with fewer children where he could be the youngest. A home was found with a family in the Duarte 2nd Ward, and the transfer was made. I made a scrapbook for Bernie, and we told him we loved him and that he could always come to us - which years later he did- but it was difficult. He had lashed out often at Phoebe, but bless her heart, she said, when told that he would be leaving, "But, I forgive him!"

Little by little, things improved - and April found us celebrating Eliza's 2nd birthday.

Here's Harry in the Clifton Marching Band in May of 1985 - and there appear to be no other photographs until summer - photos were kind of low on the list of priorities!

July found us at St. George - enjoying the pool and all the lazing around - movies, ice cream, swimming, tennis in the early a.m., temple trips for dad and me, the Shakespeare Festival, and lots more. Here are some pool shots - we were there for 2 or 3 weeks, so the kids made lots of friends, since we went to church for 3 Sundays in a row.

Everyone loved Eliza - she was a thoughtful little girl - talking to everyone.

Harry playing Strongman in the water!

We had an upstairs, corner unit - pretty nice until the weekend when the power was out for 12 hours or so!

Our makeshift highchair for Eliza.

Bonny towing someone in the water. Maybe Dad with Eliza? I have a memory of a picture that I am sure is in Phoebe's possession, but this was the year that Phoebe begged to be taken on the little overnight backpacking adventure that Dad and Harry had planned. The photo shows her all decked out with her little pack. I dropped them off and then rendezvoused the next day - turns out Phoebe was not quite up to it - Dad had to carry her - and Harry carried both packs I guess. It was quite the adventure for all of them. Ask her about it! (or maybe ask Harry or Dad!)

Another important event in 1985 was the Dance Festival at the Rose Bowl. It involved many stakes in Southern California - including Karen, Scott and Amy.

And Aunt Donna!

Here we are in the stands - I was reading And Ladies of the Club - a novel that was about 5 inches thick in paperback- took me all summer to read it - but it was pretty good. The woman who wrote it was in a nursing home - she'd been writing it all her life. It was a saga starting at the turn of the century. A good read for someone like me who was spending the summer taking things pretty easy!

And Phoebe's here taking a 7th inning stretch or something!

Let me just say that Bonny and Harry are in this photo - so is Chad, Kevin, Heidi, one of the Knapp's and many others!! Have fun guessing! And Bonny can fill me in on other names!

Summertime also found me at a high school reunion - the result of connecting after 20 years with my old classmates - we had our own little reunion at Carol's house in Thousand Oaks - at least I wasn't the only pregnant lady there!!

August was Karen and Jeff's wedding - Bonny came home early from camp for the occasion.

Heading out - dressed in our finery!

On the temple grounds with Jim and Trudy.

Some of the grandkids.

Jim with Helen and Trudy.

Dad with Helen and Sunny - Susanne's sister.

Another summertime event was a visit from my old roommate Joy and her family.

And then at long last - except Hannah was not late like the previous 4 - she was even 2 days early - all the way to the hospital I kept saying, "I don't know why we are even going. They are just going to send me home."

And she was born a few hours later - probably my easiest and most satisfying birth experience. All 9 lbs. 3 oz. of her!

Some baby shots of Hannah shortly after her birth.

Bonny's 15th birthday! I'm sure Harry had a birthday celebration, but I can't find a photo of it!

Hannah in the blessing dress.

Hannah with Dad on the day she was blessed - and Phoebe was confirmed - and I don't have a picture of that either. But the shot below is of Phoebe on her 8th birthday. I think Phoebe has all those photos. When I handed them all off to her, I wasn't a blogger!

Some horsing around - and a shot of the shutters - just for a little jog down Memory Lane!

In October, Dad performed a wedding. Bishop Menlove was out of town - it was Dad's first wedding - it went well - and the couple eventually went to the temple - they had moved away, but contacted us about 10 years later and invited us to the temple. Very gratifying!

A rather poor shot, but all I could find - Halloween finery getting ready to go to the ward Halloween party.

Looks like the Cornwalls were Peter Pan that year, since that's Bishop Cornwall. Harry was Harpo Marx and it's Mike Menlove behind him. Mike Moore is next to Bishop C.

Looks like game night at Grandma and Grandpa Terrill's!

I think we had that "Where's the Bink" shirt made for Eliza's b-day.

Dad and Eliza and the teepee!

I'm not sure what prompted the look on Hannah's face!

A ward youth conference held in November of 1985.

Dad's birthday - have you noticed how his eyes are always shut in these birthday photos??

The nativity at Grandma's party.

Harry somehow injured his arm - I remember the event but not the details.

Jim and Trudy often came by after Christmas on their way to view the floats. Mary Taylor was here in SoCal that year too.

This was the family Christmas photo for 1985. We'd all survived the rocky start - and 1985 turned out to be a good year for all of us - Bernie too, as we saw him grow and thrive in his new family. Unfortunately, it would not last there either - but I am getting ahead of the story.

This anniversary post series may go the way of my Christmas cards - and get done in February - at the rate I am going!!
