Pizza and Parachutes

Tonight was pizza night - seemed to take forever to arrive though.

But that didn't diminish everyone's enjoyment of the repast - complete with paper plates and old birthday napkins!!

We emptied the Santa Cookie Jar for dessert.

And afterwards there was a bit of rolicking fun with Porter's new parachute. I had a time catching "action" shots - it was really a lot more fun that the photographs show.

I also tried for a "grandsons" shot.

And you should have seen David leading the kids in Simon Says!! Mostly it was funny seeing how the different ages grapple with the underlying concept behind Simon Says.

Dinner at Grandma's

Spaghetti seems to be the meal of choice when it's just the women and children!!

Harry was working late, Harry F. was working, Bruce was working, Phoebe and David hadn't arrived yet - so Bonny, Dawn and I fed the kids spaghetti with peas and Cesar salad. We had fresh French bread from Von's too. For dessert we had some of Grandma Mary's cookies she brought Sunday - I had wisely frozen them so we could enjoy them at our leisure.

It's a good thing I don't have to weigh in again at WW until the end of January!!

More adventures with Grannybabs

For today's activities, Henry, Eve and I went to the Krikorian and saw Charlotte's Web. It was a lovely little film. We walked there and back - when Eve gets tired, she says she's "sleep walking."

We enjoyed popcorn and red vines - and sat on the first row of the section behind the aisle that's behind those very front rows. I had to crane my neck a bit, but Henry and Eve said it was perfect.

On the way home, we stopped and watched the tae kwan do class on Foothill - and Henry and Eve karate chopped their way home!

Blogger Butts Heads With Granny Babs

These are the pictures that blogger just wouldn't upload when I tried to add them to the post below - so here they are!!

I'm gettting majorly annoyed with blogger!!

Going Out With Grandma

As part of their Christmas, I wanted to take Ara, Ella, Esme and Eve out for manicures. So we went today - and had a fine time.

Eve was quick to tell them that she was "too little for you to paint my toenails, just my fingernails."

Everyone in the shop was impressed: with their cuteness, their blondness and their excellent behavior!

You can see that we all had a fine time. We walked there - it was a lovely, breezy day - not too hot and not too cold. And the wind died down a bit.

Bonny had been there before us having a manicure, pedicure and facial - we women are into treating ourselves well! So when we were done, she emerged from her facial and took Eve and Esme home.

Then Ara, Ella and I went to Starbucks for hot chocolate, madelines and "chunky chocolate chip" cookies. I had a gift card from one of my students that I wanted to use. I discovered the value in ordering a kid's hot chocolate - it's not too hot to drink - in fact, like the baby bear's chair, bed and porridge, it was "just right."

What a great way to spend the holiday!

" . . .on Christmas day in the morning. . . "

Since we haven't had a Christmas morning featuring small children in a few years, I was concerned that we'd be awakened very early in the a.m. But the way it worked out, Dad and I were awake before anyone!! (Next was the cousin Karls who wasn't sleeping too well on account of his broken collarbone!)

So Dad and I sat in bed and perused the blog - Dad hadn't looked at it in quite awhile, and I've been away for a few days too. Dad said, "Well, here we are back where we started - a small room with a bathroom and a lousy shower! (Our very first apartment was a studio with a lousy bathroom and an equally lousy shower!)

I fell back asleep, and Dad assured me that I do indeed snore. Then Eve rushed in exclaiming that Santa had brought the requested roller skates - she had deduced that from the unopened helmut she saw under the tree.

It was fun to watch - Porter got a cheap plastic saxaphone in his stocking and would have been content with that for the rest of the day! Eve and Porter were delighted with the bear and doll that Grandma Mary had made for them. In fact, Eve ran and got the stuffed dolls Donna had given her this summer so they could all be together! And of course Hooty loved his train - and plane - and car - only the boat was missing! And Eve loved the skates and helmut, but she has been playing all day with Baby Dr. Barbie - what will they think of next??

Noah loved the quilt Hannah made for him. And they seemed pleased with their matching home/apartment tool kits - I think I need one - Dad says he's getting me one - the old brown dishpan above the fridge seems very deficient by comparison.

Dad and I got a new stove for Christmas, birthday, anniversary - which of course we already had! But Harry and Dawn surprised us with a new microwave - our old one was truly on it's last legs.

It's been a very lazy day - although the Harrys are at the house working. And of course, we all know that a woman's work is never done either!

It's Christmas Eve

Since I still haven't sent graduation announcements (lost cause) and have no clue what I'm doing for birth announcements yet, I decided not to worry about sending a Christmas card this year.

Instead, please enjoy this photo (oh, I know you will) and know that we are thinking of you all this Christmas! Not that we don't always!

Merry Christmas!!

12/22

So...I don't have any classic photos in digital format of Barb and Harry, so this one from last Christmas will have to do. (I like it, though.)

Today, as most of you know, B&H celebrate 39 years of marriage. For as many years, they have been consciously devoted to each other, their family, and the gospel, and because of that I think I figured out a few things about what a family can be. I loved my childhood and have continued to have a good life, largely because of their love and presence--even when I'm a few thousand miles away, which I have been at various times.

I think they are great parents and a great couple in part because of their individual personalities and approaches, which I think we all treasure, and in large part because of their ability and desire to work together in any circumstances, good or bad.

Happy anniversary to two pretty fabulous people! Matt and I have a date this afternoon to finish up our Christmas shopping for each other--consider it in your honor!

What was strenuous was getting blogger to post photos - which is wouldn't do.

So the following photos go with the lengthy post at the end.

Happy Reading - and maybe our techno guru Hannoula Flannigan can see what's wrong - or what I'm doing wrong.

Does this all have something to do with "the new Blogger??"

"Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches. . .

There are rumors afloat that I have somehow thrown caution to the winds and done a "theme" tree.

Let me put that rumor to rest once and for all. If you come to our house, you will note that any "theme" apparent would be something like "Making Do" or "How to rob the pantry and trim your tree is 1 easy hour!!"

This is what happened. As Christmas got closer and it became apparent that Harry and Dawn would be spending it with us, I decided that we should just get a tree, put lights on it and decorate with some homemade ornaments - that could just be discarded when we were done.

The more I thought about it, the more the idea appealed to me on many levels. I really do not enjoy driving over to the shop - it's not in the best neighborhood - going through boxes and digging out what I want to take back to the house, schlepping it out to the car and then into the house, bugging Dad to get the tree up, hoping someone will want to help, staying up late trimming the tree.

And then on January 1st, I start resenting everyone watching the football games and not helping me take down and pack up the Christmas decor. Tossing nearly everything - all biodegradeable too - seemed the better choice!

And I didn't relish the idea of having to keep the living room off limits. I didn't want some family treasure to get broken or damaged and then feel bad about it. We haven't have small children around her 24/7 for a few years, after all.

Harry F. said, "Well, you had decorations when you had little kids and nothing bad happened." What he doesn't remember is that I had lots of very unbreakable, fabric type items in those days.

At any rate, the ease of this new plan of mine just took over my mind - alia jacta est (which is Latin for "the die is cast")and voila - we did it last night.

I started by getting greenery and poinsettias for the mantle and we've made do with the chocolate grocery store advent calendars. I did get out the Christmas linens and dishes and pitchers. Everything else is fresh and new - at least relatively fresh and new - things do dry out!

Then I found some magazine articles for making ornaments out of pretzels and cookies with holes in the middle. Eve and Porter got some ornaments as favors at a birthday party, and I got some on my Mimi cake last spring. I also bought some from Henry's school fundraiser and added them. The Santa on the top was a freebie you got for buying 3 American Greetings cards.

After celebrating Dad's birthday last night - with homemade spaghetti sauce - on spaghetti noodles of course - and pineapple upside down cake - sans the maraschino cheeries, since I forgot to buy them - we went to work. And a fine time was had by all.

Almost too fine a time - Harry F. kept razzing me about making ornaments out of Oreos - America's favorite cookie he kept saying - and he made one all right - I'm sure you'll find it in the pictures!

Porter has been taking bites out of the cookies within his reach. And Eve's contribution was a parade of candy canes on the bottom row. We are quite festive around here.

And I'm thrilled to think that we mostly just have toss it all on January 1st!

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Happy 62nd, Dad! It's also my roommate's 21st birthday. And I bet it's a nice day to be in sunny California. Can't wait to see you in a few days.

Afterword

Blogger is not very helpful tonight. It wouldn't let me add more pictures. So here's a new post and a couple of more pictures from Grandma's party.

Every year I say something like, "I'm going to gather up all my pictures from past Grandma Terrill Christmas parties and do a wonderful montage."

And every year I don't do it.

This year is no exception!!

Over the congested freeways and through the rain, to Grandmother's Party we go!!

The Annual Grandma Terrill's Party was held last night. Our numbers were smaller and some key players were not there, but we had a fine time. The nativity had a pleasant new twist - small boys willing to be sheep - in fact - embracing being sheep - and being sheep with flair and panache! We had to go a cappella since Bonny and Bruce had prior committments, but we didn't do too badly.

Scott, Shelley and girls were there - and it was great to see them. Frances and Dee trekked down for the occasion too. We enjoyed meeting the new Miss Ciesla, who came with her mom, dad and older siblings. And Robin, Chris and Lorie had a dog along for the ride to Utah that was coming up after the party. Jesse, Susanne, and Cecilia were there too, as were Doug, Jenae and kids, Harry and Barb, and Harry, Dawn and kids.

Grandma was in her usual fine form with spinach dip, hot wassail, and Marie Callendar pies.

The party's been going on for a lot of years. It's an enduring tradition and we thank Grandma T. for her efforts!!
