In the blink of an eye

As I typed the title, I taken aback a bit when I considered that the hurricane I plan to talk about has an eye!

Our good friends Kay and Steve Lineback - he's a chaplain in the Navy - live in New Orleans - they only moved there last fall - it is his last post before he retires - they evacuated Saturday to their son's home in Atlanta. They are safe, but they have no idea how their home fared. It is apparently on higher ground, but it could be looted for all they know.

My other good friend Lynn forwarded Kay's email to me - and I thought of sweet Tina Mundy who is buried in New Orleans - anyway, I thought that I would ask any or all who would like to remember everyone there especially as we fast on Sunday. Maybe the Church leaders will even suggest it.

I don't know if there are more disasters now - or if I just pay more attention to them now. At any rate, this one is pretty horrific.

Like my friend Lynn said, "Guess we ought not to complain about school starting!" (She works at a high school.)

It certainly only takes a blink of an eye.

O Brothers, Where Art Thou?

Harry and Noah have been awfully quiet lately. Not that the rest if us have been Chatty Cathys. I thought that Harry would be all over the blog now that he has his new computer!
And I had a great time with Noah last week. I love any excuse to go to Ciocolat and the Cheesecake Factory in the same week! No, Mom, I don't know how many points that is...but I could probably find out, although like pretending that it isn't very many.

a bit of cheating.....

I copied part of this from my post on blogander.

I'm sorry - but that's life.

so - we've been RELISHING the last weeks of summer. I am PAINED at the thought of going back to school. Probably more so than my children. I think they are excited to see their friends. I, on the other hand, don't want to get back to HAVING to be somewhere (school (8:45 AM), soccer practices, games, piano, homework) the list is endless.

so enough with the whining - we've been going to the beach, going swimming - the hair's getting a little green, some day trips. We went to Santa Barbara this week. We had fun at the zoo. Their big cat part rocks. They put some big rocks right by the plexiglass and the lions just hang out - 6 inches away!!! One lioness just took a walk right in front of me. Talk about muscles.

We also went to the coolest park ever - also in SB - it has these big tree houses, castles and big cast concrete whales and sharks. And lots of big trees. I am so tempted to move to the old SB - what a fabulous town. And the lifestyle is so choice - so european. anyway - i digress. we've also done lots of other fun things, although not nearly as many as i wanted to at the beginning of the summer. i guess there's always christmas vacay.

well - i've rambled plenty - off to work - i never thought i'd be a bookeeper when i grew up - although i also never thought i'd live in malibu either. I guess sometimes it's better not to plan.

ouch!!! it got me....

they are not my doppelgangers

Usually at the pool, I notice that a lot of little girls are named Hannah, which is really quite annoying... I'm always curious as to why a parent is telling me to stop running. Anyway, a mom was telling her little girl (Hannah) to stop pestering her little brother... I thought it was especially fitting that the little brother's name was Noah.

FUNNY!

Oops, I forgot the bathing beauty! Posted by Picasa

Hi, Sierras!

Sorry about the out-of-order photos. I do have some learning to do if I am going to post pictures. These are all thanks to Harry, who dropped by this PM with a CD.
The trip was really nice. Short, but nice. Trail head (Mosquito Flats, above Bishop) on Tues. the 16th, slept over and started hiking on Wed. AM. 5 1/2 miles , 2,000 ft. elevation gain over Mono Pass and then down another 1,000 ft. or so to Trail Lake. We slept (and got rid of altitude headaches), we read, we ate, we fished, we ( a couple of us) jumped in the lake, we slept, we ate, we read, etc., etc. Harry came home early on Thursday to go to Holly's wedding ; Noah, Ryan and I returned Friday evening. The best kind of therapy!

3:20

i think that this is harry's best marathon time.

i've been running a bit lately and recently found this group of runners that runs in santa monica, usually taking a course down through santa monica canyon to the boardwalk, along the boardwalk and then up the across the california incline bridge and up the incline.

the last time i ran with them i thought i'd try to go faster than i normally do, since my purpose of running on pavement and with a group is to try to learn to run faster. anyway, i ran the 5.5 miles at what seemed like a pretty fast pace. that pace ended up being at an average pace of 7:40 per mile.

ara helped me find the calculator on the computer, and i did a quick calculation. to run a 3:20 marathon, one has to have an average mile pace of 7:38.

i think we've all been impressed with harry's marathoning, but if you want to be more impressed go take a little run at a 7:38 pace.

i guess i do have about 20 years to work up to that pace and distance, and lots of people run faster and longer at 60 than they do at 40.

keep it in the family

Since I disappointed everyone and strayed from pursuing a BA in English, I decided to go for the next best option... I got a job with the English department! Boo yah, Grandma. I'm now an office assistant in the department's computer support center... it's one of those jobs that involves "heavy lifting." The woman that hired me (who is awesome and so nice) was saying that they don't usually hire girls because of said "lifting," but the faculty likes working with girls better. And since I was so enthusiastic (which she attributed to my CA roots) she liked me immediately. Cool, huh?

So... yay. I'm only at the pool for another week!

whoop

for those who didn't make it out to the show friday, (that being most of these readers, understandably) here is the sole picture i have of the event:

there we are playing 'folsom prison blues'. the crowd was awesome, and so were the other bands. click on that picture to get the bigger one, i'll have more soon if anyone wants to see.

ours doesn't look like this

since we have tandem fever, and karen might be catching it, we thought you might like to see this. i've learned that schwinn made the mini twinn in 1968 only, and only made 1000 of them. they seem to cost as much as $2100. manny's lowriders has three, ranging from $400 to $1000.

lately, bonny has been saying that i don't have enough projects...

What a Difference a Day Made...

Sing that song to yourself as you view these pictures, and it will make it that much more fun. Or perhaps "Memories light the corners of my mind...misty water-colored memories, of the way we were." Anyway, Mom asked me to post these. Click on a picture to see a (slightly) larger size. Special thanks to Donna, from whose blog I stole the 1961 version.

Pictures

I was perusing BYU’s library Web sites when I came across the BYU Museum of Art’s online collection, which is a selection of several thousand MOA images, low-res scans of which are available online here.

I thought it was kinda cool. You can search by artist, subject, title, medium, description, or general keyword. I tried a few searches—an artist search for Teichert and another for Dixon (two big names at the MOA); a subject search for Christ. There isn’t a ton available, and there are certainly better online collections out there provided by bigger (and better) museums and libraries, but I thought it was interesting. The MOA is best known for LDS and Utah images, so it’s kind of limited—or specialized, I guess, depending how you look at it.

Speaking of which, the LDS Gospel Art Picture Kit is also an easy resource for LDS images (for lessons, etc.) I use it all the time. It's kind of hard to find on LDS.org though (it's under "Home and Family") so I thought I'd post the link.

Okay, back to my real job.

InTandem

Bruce bought another tandem bike this week. It was actually a great purchase because now we have 2 so Bruce and I can both ride with Ara or Ella and put Esme' and Annika in the child carriers on the back. It's a bit heavy, but once you get going it's no problem. These pictures are from our family home evening this week. Annika had a great time until the end, then she started screaming and kicked off her shoe somewhere on Malibu road - Ara's eagle eye noticed it.

So next time anyone's down we'll have to go tandem biking - it's pretty cool.

lunch

today i ate lunch with julius schulman.

for me that was pretty cool.

for those of you who recognize the name you will understand why. julius shulman is THE architectural photographer of the 20th century, truly an icon. he started by shooting richard neutra houses after WWII and really contributed to the modern movement in los angeles and in the world. he is 95, still working, and still living in the case study house designed for him by raphael soriano in 1949 and built in 1950. the house is a historic landmark.

the lunch was at the house. while we waited for him to change his shirt and shave for an afternoon portrait for W magazine (taken of him, not by him) i got to hang out in his office and look through a booklet of black and white photos that he took of the house during construction (sitting in an original arne jacobson egg chair while i perused.) we also walked through the house and gardens and looked at all of the photos (eames, neutra, lautner, koenig) that i've seen in books over the years.

you may be wondering how this happened, as was i.

yesterday i was scheduling a meeting for today with a client. as she was going over her schedule she said- i'm having lunch with julius shulman, would you like to join me? i was nervous to crash the party but since she brought it up felt that it was ok to say yes.

apparently she met him at a fundraiser over the weekend and they hit it off. she asked if she could bring him lunch this week, he agreed.

the lunch attendees were julius, his work partner juergen, his assistant, my client and me. we talked about a number of things, malibu being one of them. he spent nights on saddlepeak (just above our house) as a boyscout, and has worked here since 1929.

every once in a while i think it would be nice to retire, and every once in a while i think it would be nicer not to.

Peter Gilbert - looks like (Great to some of you) Grandpa Clayton reincarnated!

If you're not a certain age, this is not going to mean anything to you, but Peter Gilbert looks like the way I used to remember my Grandpa Clayton looking - he is truly his father's son. And looking at old photos reminded me of how much the current crop of what would be my Grandpa Clayton's great-great-grandchildren look like the kids in the old photos!

The next generation playing in the sand

There were lots of adolescent boys - and a few adolescent girls - but a plethora of little girls who were all Clayton Cousin Grandkids - although Alyssa is a bona fide grandchild (as opposed to being a great-grandchild) who enjoyed the sand at "Honeybun Beach!" (Ara, Ella, and Esme Bolander and Alyssa (grandchild), Madison and Brooklyn Clayton - Pam's granddaughters)

Games, Games, Games, Games, GAMES

Hey Family,

I’m in charge of my work picnic on Friday night and am trying to think of a couple of mixer games (besides karaoke to New Kids on the Block’s smash hit “Games,” which personally I think would be quite fun). Apparently last year they did the one where you go around and try to find somebody with green eyes, who’s been to France, etc., and the first one to finish wins. They also did the “guess how many pieces of candy are in this jar?” game.

Anyway. So I’m trying to think of a game or two, just ice-breakers so everybody isn’t just sitting around. It’s a family party, so people are bringing their kids, and there will probably be about 25 adults and 25 kids there (give or take). There is a playground and a baseball field, so people won’t be totally bored, but somewhere in between dinner and hanging out, I think a few games are in order.

Ideas?

Ready…go!

In 1961, at Lyn's missionary farewell, there was photo taken of Great Grandpa Clayton with all of his grandkids (Anne got included as a grandkid - though she was his kid!) Donna brought the photo to the reunion, so we got together everyone who was in the photo at the reunion and took another photo - this time Grandma Clayton was in the center (in the original she was at the edge, holding a less than co-operative toddler Donna. I will search for the original of the original photo from 1961 so I can scan it on and post it - I think you will all enjoy it - talk about time marching on!!

annika on her birthday

Can Can

Although it has been a year since my first endeavor, I successfully canned 30 quarts of Peaches yesterday, with my 2 children at home with me. I think that I can do anything now!
I still have leftover peaches and now I have a hankering for pie. Does anyone want to come over for pie tonight? You are always welcome!

Do you remember?

I watching a preview for Dukes of Hazzard and I had a feeling that we weren't allowed to watch the show when we were growing up. Does anyone else remember? I definitely remember that we couldn't watch Three's Company and for some reason LaVerne and Shirley. Yet, I watched Psycho when Iwas 5. Go figure.

It is apparently really called Ladder Jacks - and was immensely popular - the way horseshoes is usually popular! David got the idea at a Father and Sons outing and made his own - some woman came over oohing and aahing because she thought they were the only people in the world who knew about the game - she's the one who said it was called Ladder Jacks - she was happy to find a compatriot.

Fast as You Can

Karen asked about the Backbone run—here are a few pics.

I thought the run was fun, although personally I had a lot of trouble on those uphills, as Dad in particular can attest! Lesson for next time (for me) is practice running on mountain trails beforehand (although the treadmill really is my friend, I must say), and/or bring an inhaler. And more snacks in my pocket. I think we covered about 14 or 15 miles or something, with the guys running significantly more than the rest of us. Noah was our resident biker.

Here’s the group with early-morning eyes (sans Mom, who took the picture):

Here’s a mid-run shot.

I don’t have a camera, so these are stolen from Mom, I think. The main reason I like the second picture is that I’ve looked at it several times and only just now noticed Ella and Esmé in the background. I’m guessing Ella is catching Esmé as she jumps from the back of the truck, but since I didn't notice the tailgate it looked like Ella was holding Esmé up like a little baby. I think it’s funny.

So, that’s that. I say it was a success. What was everybody else's opinion?
