Our house... in the middle of the street.

The house

a chunk of backbone

this is bruce by the way.

i had an idea last night and worked on it a little this morning during my run on the backbone trail. the backbone trail is a trail (hence the name) that runs along the santa monica mountains, from pacific palisades to point mugu (ventura county.) it's about sixty miles long, with varying trail types and grades.

anyway- bonny and i were talking about lake tahoe. the problem we saw was that it isn't exactly inclusive. first of all, only six people run. we could also field more than one team, which would solve that. the second problem is larger. basically if you can't make about ten miles at altitude with some elevation change, you're kind of out.

you can see where i'm going with this. what if we did our own relay, mostly family, maybe friends if needed? we could cover the backbone trail in one day and end up either with a barbeque at the beach or just come back to our house. the distances and diffuculties could be varied so that even the kids could participate. there are sections of the trail that will accomodate jogging strollers and mountain bikes. i think we'd need to use some bikes to make the distance in one day. the scenery is nice. for some of us it wouldn't even be much of a drive to get here. we could cram in to our house the night before and get those on the first legs off to an early start.

i am thinking we could do it sometime this summer. it would be hot in parts, but there are great tree/chaparral canopies over large sections.

i have a goal to cover all of the trail in the next month or so. i'm about half way there now, so it should be doable. i will know more then.

a few pennies for all of your thoughts on this.

Rejoicing at the Fillmores (Sort of)

SOOOOO...
David got an offer from Blue Shield in El Dorado Hills. He has not yet recieved an offer from Medocino Redwood company, which is the company he really wants an offer from, so you see the rejoicing problem.
I, however, am proud of David and feel like a burden has been lifted. We now have options!! Or at least one option.
Henry is sad because David took him to go bowling tonight while I was at my stake meeting and the bowling alley was closed because it was league night. He was still sad about it when I got home. Keep your fingers crossed that the bowling alley will be open the next time we go or we will never hear the end of it.
I am also RSVPing that the Fillmores will be at the Terrill Family Reunion.
Last item of business, I was at my meeting tonight and I am once again fired up about food storage. Just in time for canning season. If I could only figure out wheat!
Wait! One more thing. The Fillmores have also given up TV this week in honor of National Turn Off the TV week. 3 days TV Free. We are feeling the last withdrawals. Go Us!

Get ready for a new, improved, extra-fancy blog!

FYI--pictures

I had a picture epiphany last night. I’m going to set up a Flickr account for the familia that everybody can post pictures to—that way family pictures will all be in one place; also, with Flickr it’s quite easy to post pics to the blog automatically. I’ll work on this and send everybody instructions. All in favor please indicate. All opposed by the same sign.

Happy Birthday Maud - and other news

Well, today is Maud Hart Lovelace's birthday - author of the noble tomes of Betsy-Tacy. I'm sure we'll be celebrating tonight at FHE.

ALso, Esme fell out of bed last night and smacked her mouth. It is swollen about three times its normal size. And it BLED. I am washing all of her bedding. Blood is even on the pic of Eve she went to bed with. Can you tell she loves her cousins? Poor bruce didn't realize how bad it was in the middle of the night in the dark. He knew there was some blood, but the daylight was a wowser (is that a word?) She seems to be handling it well, except when she was watching me strip the bed - "oooh mom, blooood!" and there are no loose teeth (thank goodness). I guess we'll go back to our old routine of laying pillows everywhere.

Anyway, Happy Birthday to Maud and Maudvibes to Esme'.

weekend update

well, we were certainly on the road this weekend.

Saturday, after i ran/ walked our hill, we went to Camarillo - to the outlets to return a couple of bruce's bd presents. On the way home we stopped at Nicholas Cyn Beach - a lovely beach - lots of rocks to climb on and just a nice sweep of beach for a view. We all had fun.

After church today - we had lunch at the McLeans. I love it when people invite us over for a meal. it was a very tasty meal too. She got a stuffed turkey from Whole Foods, Yams, Jell-o, veggies, salad. We joked that it was a thankful meal.

Then we went to Saira's to see her new baby. We had a great little visit and the kids all behaved. Of course she made food for us, even though I told her on Friday that she was supposed to rest and not fix anything. But we had a very tasty chicken soup with rice. Bruce had a major flashback to his mission I think. Her baby is very cute, and Saira seems to be feeling well. I hope we didn't wear her out too much. She seemed so excited to have us, it took forever for us to say goodbye.

Anyway, we came home, ate the rest of the cookies I had made for Isela and everyone is in bed at a decent hour - I LOVE IT. Annika is finally learning to go to sleep by herself - hooray, so we've all been sleeping better.

Oh, funny aside about my walk/run yesterday. I ran down our hill to LF Hghts, then started to run up - as I was about to quit because my legs were on fire, some guy drove down the hill and yelled "you go girl!!" Of course I had to keep running until he was out of sight, and then I collapsed to a crawl. Maybe one day I'll actually be able to run not just down our hill, but all the way back up.

Weekend update - or all the action on Primrose!

A busy weekend - Dad had a class party last night for his Gospel Essentials class - we had some family history games for mixers, then a veritable feast of lasagne - of which I did not partake!, salad, fresh french bread (of which I did partake!) and sherbet and pirouettes for dessert - not Pepperidge Farm either, a new kind, LU - very good - I partook - and had to repent today!

Then we hit the street fair - fun as usual. Got some oranges and tangerine flavored honey - very yummy.

Then we came home and watched the clean flicks version of Amistad - a pretty good film.

Today I cleaned house - Saira is out of commission for a few weeks - she had a baby boy on April 6th - and it got dirty enough around here to motivate me! I even washed curtains!!

Then Mary Taylor came by for a visit - we had a very nice visit too - Dad saw her briefly, since he and Noah got home from work just as she was leaving.

Then we went to Jeff McGlone's open house - and the IN 'N OUT truck was there - taking orders - your dad had 2 double doubles - I had fruit - and lots of it!! The bride said she knows Eliza and Matt - said Matt was her home teacher briefly. They looked like a happy couple. The Moores were there - at least Helen and Everett were and Olga and Bob Coleman - old home week.

So now it's off to bed - 7 a.m. Welfare meeting to look forward to - the amaryllis, calla lillies and my Marilyn Monroe roses are all in bloom - the living room is a veritable florist shop!! (And Grandma T. sent over roses from her garden with Mary.)

The previous sentence would be a good example for teaching misplaced modifiers!!

Yeah

Dear Media Arts Applicant,
Your application to the Media Arts program has been reviewed and we are pleased to accept you as a Media Arts Minor.

Woohoo! So... depending on how my job interviews go on Monday, I might be starting classes in the spring. Sigh. Who knows?

I'm in my new house. It's very 1950s. We even have authentic poppy wallpaper in our kitchen from the 50s. Problem is, the old roommate hasn't moved out, and the new Japanese roommate hasn't moved in, and I can't really maneuver in my room yet. I'll post pictures when Tamara gets back with her camera.

King Henry's in the bathtub and he won't get out!

So here we are in Sunny Santa Rosa, quite a nice place I must say. David had the big interview today with Medoncino Redwood Company, keep your fingers crossed. Maybe we can move to another place that we can't afford...
We are staying at some fancy hotel and Henry is sleeping in the bathtub. It works out quite nicely I must say. I always have my camera with me, but alas, I cannot find it! So just picture Henry all cozied up with blankets and pillow in the bathtub.
Last night we stayed in Ukiah at the Hampton Inn. It was actually really nice, voted #1 in California and 10th in the world for Hampton Inns. Ukiah is beautiful! However, I don't think that we could live there. We walked over to the Wal-mart to buy sunscreen and literally 3 people openly stared at us at different times in the store. I know that I am strikingly beautiful and that I have stunning children, but I am still unclear on the staring, it made me uneasy. We shall see.
I miss you all, oh yeah, chopped all the hair off. David has never seen me with hair this short. I am enjoying it. No more conditioner!

Many happy returns

"Many happy returns of the day" to Bruce today on his B-day.

a reminder

well, not only is tomorrow eliza's birthday (happy birthday eliza!!!)it is also free cone day at ben and jerry's. Unfortunalterly for us in malibu our dreams have gone up in smoke. b & j caught fire sunday (as did the theater, beauty shop and restaurant - actually it started in the beauty shop) so we are out of luck for tomorrow - so have a cone in honor of the bolanders. this may be the first free cone day we've missed.

Yay Dad!

Check out Dad's progress at baa.org. (After the race starts at 12:30 ET, that is.) His bib number is 7634.

how many pounds

of hair were shed by the bolander family today? it's hard to say, but bruce alone could tip the scales. ara, ella, and esme' wanted in on it too. bruce's looks exceptionally fine and esme' is way cute with the louise brooks look happening.

so we were all shorn and sunburned. not really sunburned, but it sounded so good. we went on a hike in the malibu canyon state park. lots of poison oak, rattlesnakes, rock climbers and even a swimming hole!!! everyone did so well, it was about 3 miles and we made good use of our backpacks (to carry annika and esme')

it was pretty cool

well, i'm off to put the kidlets to bed for the 14th time. i guess i should quit fooling around on the computer and FOCUS.

hey dad - good luck with the boston on monday - we are rooting for you

On your marks, get set, go . . .

We are off to Boston early a.m. tomorrow - and it is Enrichment tonight - and I am trying to finish sending off the reunion notices - and I got stuck in a good book!!

Anyway, think good thoughts for your dad - I fear he doesn't feel as well prepared as he would like to feel - and tomorrow is Tax Day - don't ask!!

Summertime . . .and the livin' is easy. . .

Reunion notices went out in the mail this week - from the Queen of Correspondence herself - Terrill Reunion is July 22nd, 23rd - Disneyland and the beach. Clayton Reunion is August 6th - a Saturday - good thing I chose that, since Nora's wedding is the next Saturday the 13th!! Clayton Reunion is a beach affair like two years ago - we are open to input, suggestions, assistance - let me know if your flyer didn't come - I would like to compile all the email addresses and send out some mass mailings that way - there are still people in this world who don't have email, or who have email and never read it, etc. so we should cover all bases.

Looking forward to summer!!

Spring Break - yea!!

I am enjoying not going to work every day - but I am certainly not sitting around doing nothing. In fact, yesterday a.m. I walked over to Launa's to help her pack - she leaves for St. George tomorrow a.m. The old guard is truly leaving when Launa goes! She has so much stuff! It was incredible - and she has already given tons away, had a very lucrative garage sale, donated piles and piles to D.I., had a truck come from Arcadia Thrift Shop (and filled it!), and sent Sue C. home with a car full of books for our Book Exchange on Thursday at Enrichment.

So I went home and purged my own book shelves, closets, cupboards and drawers! It' spretty impressive. (Wait until I hit the room in the garage - which I had hoped to hit this week, but I don't think it's going to happen - guess I'll save it for some free Saturday - ha, ha!)

And I went to Weight Watchers and had lost another 2 and a half pounds!! Go Mom!!

Spring has SPRUNG!

Today was the hottest day of the year. That's not saying much, since the year is hardly a third of the way through. But it was a nice 75 degrees. Yay.

And yesterday I wore the cool new poncho that Mom gave me, which was COOL, but I got a few funny comments on it. Like the one from the girl that said I reminded her of a wet nurse. Or when I said that my sister had a poncho that doubled as sort of a cover when she was nursing her child, my co-worker (who had been giving me a weird look ever since she first saw me wearing it) said, "So... is that yours?" Ha.

I bought an entire gallon of milk. Maybe it won't run out in a day like my last half gallon. Not all because of me, mind you... pahaha.

Oh yeah... and I have a job interview on Monday. Eek!

That's the good word!

Hey

Well, we journeyed to the land of Monrovia on Tuesday. I even got the kids outof school early.

We had an awesome time with Harry, Dawn, Eve, and Porter at the mall - you guys have the grooviest mall. It's like Disneyland. We got to experience the Merry-go-round and the playground. Very cool.

Noah's movie was awesome. I didn't know what to expect and I was very pleasantly impressed. Go Noah!

Well, my house is in order, my laundry is finished and I actually exercised this morning. I think I am ready to be translated.
