mom told me again and again that i should post this, so i gave in:

i know that most of you won't be able to make it out to the festival, but if you can i hope that you do. if not, i'll try to get copies out to all of you.

Easter goodies

Dad, in his infinite wisdom, gave me a book for Easter!! And it was great!! I had planned to sew Esme's pajamas yesterday - since we had a day off - but I spent the day reading instead. (I did do laundry, took the dry cleaning in, finished cutting out the p.j.'s and sewed a few seams - but the siren call of the printed word was overwhelming!!) As compelling as GWTW!! It is called "March" by Geraldine Brooks - who wrote "Year of Wonders," the novel about the plague. This is scaffolded by the story line of "Little Women" and is the story of the year Mr. March spent in the war, when he was gone in the novel. The author used the voluminous journals of Bronson Alcott for material - and it is a great read - a real page turner as they say at my book club. I think you will all want to read it - sign up now!!

bonny informed me today that i was the only member of the family to have not yet participated in these shenanigans, so i thought i might. just for kicks. and since i really have nothing to say anyways, i thought i would share this, for those who have not yet seen:

before

after.

so it was done.

and on that note, i would add that while i do not like blogger, i do like having a domain, especially for things like this. :-)

Happy Easter!

Happy Easter!

Went out to the Selanders for Easter dinner, and Eliza and I got to pose with our Easter outfits that we shopped for yesterday... gone are the days of the puffy sleeves, but I think we did alright. Although I hear Eliza tried on a few outfits last night and decided to wear something she already owned... which is fine. I do that all the time.

The rest of the day was lovely... had Pies 'n Sais over at our apartment, haha. As I have mentioned many a time, I don't have many skills, but at least I can bake a mean pie. Or five. Lemon merengue, chocolate, apple, banana cream, and cherry. Go me. And the sai part... I have sai skills too, I guess. I was a Ninja Turtle for Halloween and my sais are still sitting in the living room, but they make a GREAT conversation piece.

Anyway, Happy Easter to all. Hope that the day was all that and more.

Happy Easter!

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." - John 13:15. (Maybe it's 15:13; I don't remember.) One of my fave scriptures, and an attempt to attach some true-meaning-of-Easterness to the day. (For me, it's easily swallowed up in the excitement of chocolate and new clothes.)

Hannah, Tammy (H's roommate), Matt and I had a nice Easter dinner of pork chops and golden mushroom soup. And other stuff too. Matt was a little confused by the concept--when I explained what it was, he said, "Oh, I thought it was like everybody got their own pork chop and a bowl of soup." Sure, nothing fancy, and not especially popular outside of the immediate Terrill circle, but easy and good (to us, at least!), with plenty of See's candy for dessert. Hannah'll post some pictures later on. I know you're on pins and needles.

Well, I didn't quite get my fill of candy earlier, so I guess I'd go better eat some more chocolate butter eggs. Happy Easter!

Easter Eve

I don't know if we dyed eggs last year or not - I bet I said, "Who wants to dye eggs?" or something like that. But I didn't even buy the dye this year - and I'm pretty sure I bought it last year. I guess some things come to an end. I did buy See's chocolate butter eggs - and your dad bought scotch kisses and chocolate almonds and had me make up little Easter bags for his home teaching families. And I did make a basket for Noah - put three cans of Franco-American in it too - along with some Tom's brand deodorant and shaving cream - for his newly shaved head I guess! (and See's chocolate butter eggs, of course.) And I sent the basket fixings for Hannah to Eliza - and she did a commendable job as E. Bunny. I also made an Easter basket for Sylvia - my success story gone inactive once more - but I think it made her feel loved. And we are doing refreshments at R.S. tomorrow, so I made some little treats to pass out to the Primary and Y.W. sisters.

But I miss those hard-cooked eggs - somehow the colored ones taste better!

The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century

I love NPR. And I daresay that the entire Terrill clan feels the same way. And I love my humanities class, because we get to write papers on cool things, like our reactions on the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century, according to NPR. A list can be found here. I found some of the selections pretty interesting. Your thoughts?

Students splash, dash for cash By Emilie Foss Daily Universe Staff Reporter

Not a typical Olympic biathlon of cross-country skiing and shooting, “Do it for the health of it,” said Hannah Terrill, event specialist for Campus Life Events Management Team.
The different divisions in this year's Splash and Dash include: beginner, standard, elite and team. The beginner level is a quarter-mile swim and a 3K run. The standard is a half-mile swim and a 5K run. The elite level is a mile swim and a 10K run. The team is the same as the elite, but can be split by two people. There is also just a 5K run for those interested. Depending on their level of physical condition, students could choose from any of the five events, beginner being the easiest. .
No matter what level of fitness, anyone can participate.
“It attracts not only the hard core runners, but also those who have never done any type of run before,” said Ben Wilson, 23, a recreation management major, from Orem. “With the different levels it allows the students to not be intimated by someone who is doing this type of thing all of the time and gives them a chance to win prizes as well.”
While training is not necessary, many prepare for the competition of the event.
Student Natalie Young, an open major from Richland Wash., has been training for the Salt Lake City Marathon and will be attending the Splash and Dash as a practice round.
“I have never done a biathlon before and I think it will be a good starting experience for more to come,” Young said. “I am excited. For the past year I have swam twice a week and ran four times a week.”
Sponsored by Campus Life Events Management Team, the BYU biathlon began in Fall Semester 1998 and has since been hosted at the Richard's Building swimming pool. Since then, the name changed to the "Splash and Dash" and the 5K running event has been added.
While many groups on campus have runs, no other group hold runs with swimming as well.
“We are the only campus group that has had arrangements with the swimming team to do this kind of a program,” said Ron Jones, coordinator for Campus Life Events Management. “We get into events to fill a need based on what students on campus say they like to do. We usually go in the hole by doing these kind of events, but if there is ever excess money it goes right back into a student program.”
Race fees will range from $10-$20, depending on the division. Registration will take place in the RB quad on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Regardless of rain or snow the event will take place.
“It is just something to get students outdoors and get involved in something they are interested in doing,” Terrill said. “Get out there and see what you can do, you don’t know until you try it.”

The Doneys' First Week

Couldn't resist sending along the following from Frances:

Sent: 3/21/2005 6:16:57 PM
Subject: First Five Days
Hi Dear Loved Ones,

This has been a week of firsts.

First you drive around with a map in your hands. The roads were originally cow paths or as Dee puts it Indian paths. The roads change names about every other block and they twist and turn Y off and there are all sorts of roads that are one way. We got here Wednesday night and spent Thursday driving around trying to find the church, grocery store, Lowes (bed sags in the middle had to fix that fast 2x4's cut up worked wonders), cleaners, etc.

Friday we delivered our first media referral to a Haitian lady and found Esther Glay who we are supposed to give a ride to church. Esther is from Libya and so is her friend Columa. They speak broken English (or that is what I call it) They were so hard to understand but we made do and it all worked out. They are both retired. We went home for lunch and then the supervising Elders came at 2:00 and left at 4:00. We were dead tired and were in bed at 8:00 PM It's funny you get up at 6:30am (Dee does I moan and groan it feels like 4:30 to me, it is in Utah) then night comes like 4,5,6 and we feel as if it's 10 or11 at night. It shouldn't feel early at all we should be going until midnight. Oh well Dee says it's the altitude change I hope so because I am tired of being tired.

Saturday we went to a luncheon and testimony meeting for the senior couples at the mission presidents home. It was very nice. We left at 9:30am drove for 2 hours to Hartford and left at 4:00pm for the trip home. The Robertson's (senior ces couple took us over with them so we could see how to get there. (the roads here were not laid out by Mormons).

Church was great! About 60 in attendance and 10 were missionaries. It is a very diverse group of people. Very friendly and nice. Relief Society lesson was in Portuguese and a sister stood next to her and translated into English (and Spanish when needed). Sacrament Meeting had a translator on head sets. Sunday School was broken into Portuguese and English classes. We went home ate dinner/lunch marked Book of Mormons wrote our testimony for them, studied some and were dead. Early to bed and then the supervising Elder calls for our report for the week at 9:15pm.

Monday P Day we cleaned, washed clothes, grocery shopped worked out in the gym here and then played pool with the young Elders. Dee won a couple of the games. I lost the game I played. The Elders brought some table games to play at the club house here they had a great time. After 6:00pm we made media calls to make appointments to deliver the dvd, videos, Book of Mormons or Bibles they have requested. Tomorrow will be a busy day.

We have your pictures up on the wall, sent more and we will put them up. Amy thanks for the picture of the twins. Ella is filling out.

This mission stuff is GREAT! We love it.

Love you all you are in our prayers,

The Mom, Grandma, Fran
Dad, Grandpa, Dee

Eliza and Noah

Due to the high demand for pictures: here's a picture. haha. It's obviously an old one, but a picture nonetheless. That's me and Noah at the FDR monument in D.C. last summer.

Hey, I do what I can. Besides, we're not seeing enough Noah on this blog.

Ahem.

Oh yeah, and somebody (meaning Hannah or Harry, since they've got the skills) hook Bonny up with Flickr. Cause...I don't know how to use it, and haven't felt the need to learn yet, since I don't take pictures. But it could be helpful to the B-Brae. And anyone else who takes pictures. Actually it looks pretty easy to use; I think you just sorta click on "Sign Up" and go from there.

Weekend update

Work is almost over, folks! My event is officially over, no more biathlon... and soon, no more crappy boss. He drives me crazy.

Gave a talk on Sunday... I think it went well. I re-enacted Jonathan Edwards' sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." Just kidding. But I got compliments on it. Go me.

Turned in my film application... yeah! So I'll be anxiously awaiting the reply, which will probably come after finals. And I'll probably have moved out of my apartment by then, so I don't know how I'm going to swing that. Shoot.

Hope that your Monday treats you well.

And, before I forget, I think that more pictures need to be posted on here. The end.

"They clapped their hands for joy . . for this was the desire of their hearts."

We just came home from a truly wonderful evening - not just one but two baptismal services. A single fellow who has been coming for several months got baptized at 6 p.m. Your dad did the honors. And then at 7, we had an entire family - mom, dad, 4 kids - get baptized. It was a wonderful place to be. I have felt that there was still not a coming together in the "new" Monrovia Ward, but for the last few weeks it seemed to be happening - and I think now it was all the great missionary work that has been going on - what a great spirit comes into a ward and the hearts of the members when the gospel is being shared. I recommend it highly! (Dawn and I took care of the refreshments - I know you wish you were there too - pumpkin bread and chocolate chip cookies and brownies - we really thought we'd all died and gone to heaven!!

We took the plunge...

The Fillmore Family branched out and did their own rendition of the Ideas of March this past Monday eve. It was a success and we found that some of our friends have some acting talent. It's not quite the same as if we were at Mom and Dad's, but Henry enjoyed his one liner. I realized that we need an extremely large living room to perform Shakespeare and our house does not have one of those...Maybe some day.
Hey, I found out that the condos that we lived in in Concord are now selling for $450,000. I guess we won't be going back there;) Elko, NV is looking better and better!

"It's all Greek to me!"

The annual Ides of March gala extravaganza was an unequivicable success - does this have spellcheck? I'm not sure about the un- word! At any rate, a fine time was had by all. It was a first in some ways - no Terrill daughters were in attendance, but the Terrill sons and daughter-in-law did a fine job. We had some new faces - and missed some of the old faces. But some things never change - we had more than enough pizza and snacks galore - we always think that there will not be enough! The casting was superb - everyone was in fine form - and I got to be the Soothsayer - the part typically given to the oldest or youngest person there - but I fit neither category - what does this say. And Noah did a very credible Brando imitation in his role as Mark Antony. Karan was a fine Brutus - Jeff C. was Caesar, his wife was Calpurnia. Award winning performances - and still most people you talk to do don't know what you are talking about when you say "Ides of March." But the box girl knew - she said, "We read that this year." All is not lost!

overheard in our living room

Bruce: (reading Mouse a Cookie to esme') "If you give a mouse a cookie, you feed him for a day. If you teach a mouse to make cookies, he will become obese and die an untimely death"...

later

" Then, when you read him a story, he'll ask you to read it again, three more times"

later

"If you give him the milk, you will realize that once you start giving him what he wants, he'll just keep asking and asking"

I had to laugh.

brush with fame - obscure

ok, so i'm on a posting kick today. the stars all seem to be in alignment for me.

At ballet (esme's) we chitty-chat with this one mom. She's an absolute character - we love listening to her stories. Well, one day she tells us her dad was a writer and would have had an opinion on the education of her daughters, etc., etc.. So Diana and I are trying to guess who her dad could be. There aren't that many writers in So Cal. So last week she tells us her dad was.....Louis L'Amour. How cool is that? We were excited about it - and she was excited that we were excited. So now I think I'll have to go to the library and read one of the noble works.

Passing the test

Hey all - whoops - that is a huge font. That's better.

Well, I went to the temple this morning. We had a stake R.S. session. It was nice to finally go to an endowment session since our ward always does sealings for ward temple night. The session was fabulous. I saw our old bishop from Ventura. What a treat.

Speaking of Ventura, last night we ventured up to Ventura for a wedding reception. It's nice to visit the old stomping ground. Ventura was (and is) a great ward. A lot of love there. A treat to see a bunch of my former young women. Tanya Sandoval Granados is now the YW pres in her Spanish Branch. She said " It's a lot of work being in YW!" She sounded surprised. (ha ha) They seem to be doing well. Trying to keep up with their little ones. They all seem to have a one year old - which is a busy age. The girls did very well, and I must say they looked so cute in their little matching plaid skirts - quite a preppy moment. Bruce and I enjoyed a little flashback moment at the old ward house. Those were great years in Ventura.

Anyway, had spelling yesterday in the old 1st grade. Everyone except one person got 100%. That was pretty cool.

Well, I'll sign off now - time to play legos

Just in time

I am looking for a new strap for my watch, so I thought I would check the Timex website and found this accidently. http://www.timex.com/instructions/w10Instr.pdf. So basic! Of course if you can't tell time yet, can you read?
I have gone from being a bit pessimistic about running Boston to now feeling a bit good about it. I ran 16 on Saturday without any real pain. And today I came home early (11AM) and ran another 8. And I feel great. Last week at this time I could hardly get the enthusiasm up for a 4 miler. I think sleep has something to do with it.
Do we believe in miracles? Well, in Monrovia Ward they are happening. An actual full, funtioning family is going to be baptized on the 18th. These folks have 4 or 5 kids, and they love the gospel. They have been coming to church for over a month now and are well prepared. I love Moroni's dad's thoughts on faith (Moroni 7).
And that's not all. We have at least two more superb investigators that will be baptized in the not too distant future. Monrovia is a wonderful place.
I hooooooope, they call me on a mishunnn, when Ayyyyyye, have grown a foot or twoooo....

a title, a title, my kingdom for a title

well... it feels like it's been ages since i posted. so i will update you all on the mundane details of my life. Annika is a mover and shaker. She is cutting one of her fangs, rolling ALL over the room, nothing is safe and i swear she may be our only one to crawl. That child LOVES her belly. She hangs out on the floor - on her tummy. We think it is so hilarious. She also is learning to chat. The girls are determined to teach her to say hi like Ara used to. she's almost there. She does get quite loud in church with her gabbing - in a cute- distract -from- the -teacher or speaker kind of way. It hasn't reached annoying yet - i'm sure it will.

Esme' decided to visit her pre-school last week - after asking me everyday - "so what do I do at pre-school?" I decided she should see for herself. She loved it. Adjusting shouldn't be too hard.

Well, we're trying the yucky tasting paint on the fingers to get the girls to stop biting their nails. This was Ella's idea - she's very enthusiastic about it. I think her vanity may help her with this one.

well, annika is squawking - in a frustrated way -

i'll be back!!!!

This is your mother speaking - again!!

I must say I enjoy coming home from a less than satisfactory day at the old salt mines and logging on to read what you have written. Almost as good as hearing you come in the back door yelling "I'm home!" And this way I get to eat all the frosted graham crackers - Noah is a good sharer!! (and he makes some good cookies himself - it's nice to walk in and smell the aroma of fresh chocolate chip cookies!)

At FHE we discussed the Terrill Reunion - watch for info!

Hooray...for you, hooray...for me

"Hooray, hooray, for Pooh will soon be free."

Sorry, enough of the Pooh singing. Just wanted to announce that you're looking at the winner of KSL Radio's Oscar contest! I'm very excited about it, because I've never won a single contest in my life, and now I get 2 free movie tickets a week for the next year. It's especially great because I can never afford to go to the movies, so I never do, at least not until they hit the big $1 theater. But now I can. And now I'm feeling a little more zealous about entering contests. Because hey, you never know! The contest was to guess Oscar winners from 24 categories (this was before the actual Oscars occurred, haha), and I got 18 right. 2 other people got 18 right as well, so they had a drawing, and picked my name. And then I got to go on the radio and sound like a dork.

Just thought I'd share the joy. Now that that excitement is over, I get to sit through the rest of this work day. If only my life could be this glamorous all the time. haha.

I miss you all. Come visit me in Salt Lake and I'll take you to the movies.

Probably not what Dante intended

I thought I'd post something that I saw last week on the Divine Comedy website... for the uninitiated, Divine Comedy is a club at BYU that I've never seen perform, but their website looks hilar'. Check out the Mormon Ads... they're a bit... different.

YUM! - you must try the Vermonster

Oh my... we had a book club/ birthday party combo tonight at our house and the refreshments were the famous (in our house) Ben & Jerry's Vermonster. 20 scoops of ice cream, a brownie, 3 cookies, 4 bananas, as many toppings as you want(sprinkles, oreos, jelly-bellies, gummy-bears, nuts, etc.), hot fudge and whipped cream. All in your own gallon-sized Vermonster bucket. It was awesome - and everyone loved it. It is a great party treat. I highly recommend it.

Anyway - the actual book club and party were also a hit despite the rain and screaming esme' who did not want to go to bed.

Where is the Worst Case Scenario Handbook when you need it?

The boys and I thought it would be fun to go up and get David for dinner one afternoon. I loaded them up and we drove to the school. I put Calvin in the stroller when we got there because he is 16 pounds and gets a little heavy after a while. So we went into the building and David wasn't in the 1st floor study rooms, so I thought, he is probably in the 2nd floor. Henry suggested that we take the "alligator" beacuse it is a pain to haul the stroller up the stairs.
As soon as the doors shut I have a sinking feeling that we should not have stepped into the elevator. I was quickly assured that my late breaking prompting was correct.

We were trapped in the elevator for 5 minutes! Now 5 minutes might not sound like a long time, but when the elevator is lurching and slamming and Henry is telling me that he will just "hold on to the side" and Calvin is crying because of the loud slamming, 5 minutes is quite a while. I kept thinking to myself, what am I supposed to do in this situation? I told Henry to sit down, but David later informed me that it is best to lie down. The comforting thought that came to me was that the building is only 2 stories tall so I was doubtful that we would plunge to our death. So I pushed the call/firefighters button and after a few more groans and scary slamming noises we arrived on the second floor, a little shaky, but safe. So when you get trapped in an elevator, lie down!

When I informed David that we had been trapped in the elevator, he said, "Didn't you see the Out of Order sign?" I went back to check and no such sign existed, so no, I did not see the Out of Order sign.
